The Graveyard: Friday Evening

Yet another evening and yet another patrol.

This time around Mel was dragging her little sib along. Even if he was the emoest emo that ever emoted.

"C'mon Ed," Mel said with a little nudge. "You're not the first person who had to deal with this."

Ed frowned and elbowed her back. "Great. That's the best thing ever."

"Hey. You're talking to one of them," Mel said seriously. "Girl from the future trapped in the past. No family except the one I seem to be gathering here. You're not alone."

He scrubbed his fingers through his already messy hair. "How'd you figure out you couldn't get back?" he asked, trying to focus on something other than Al being gone back to Rizembool.

"Walking across the causeway didn't work. Checked with some magic-type people," Mel said thinking back. "Unfortunately the spell that sent me here was kind of a one way ticket. But I've adjusted. Made a lot of friends. And at least you have family here."

"Only if Al's able to make it back," Edward pointed out. "He disappeared - went home, I guess. But I couldn't go too. Maybe the Causeway or whatever won't let him back."

"He seems like a pretty resourceful guy," Mel replied. "Plus he has friends there, right? They can help him find a way back."

"The problem is we don't have a clue how it works," Ed said, kicking at a rock on the ground. "It's so unscientific." He shook his head. "Yeah, we have friends there. But they're automail mechanics. Can't really help with questions of alchemy."

"Is there anyone here who can help you?" Mel asked.

Edward looked shocked at the thought at asking someone else. "Yeah, I don't know. I'll start researching in the library soon as it's open again. I couldn't get back home before I got here. Just...thought I could now."

"Is there anything I can do?" Mel asked earnestly. "I mean, I've totally been where you are. I know how much it sucks."

He looked at her with the shadow of a smile. "Thanks. I'll remember that." He rubbed his left hand over his right forearm. "Maybe if I figure something out. Gotta figure out how the Causeway works in the first place."

"Man. You must have a giant brain in that head of yours," Mel snickered. "I'm pretty much good with the 'Bad JuJu! Much magic!' explanation."

"We've been scientists ever since we were little," Ed explained. "You have to be to be an alchemist. So I don't know so much about magic."

"Well we got plenty of people from other planets and stuff around here," Mel said with a shrug. "They probably have a technical explanation for you as well. Probably somewhere in between magic and science you can find an answer."

"Maybe," Edward said, shrugging as well. "Everything should be able to to be explained by science even if the people using it somehow don't understand it."

"Maybe magic is just another form of science?" Mel suggested.

"Okay. I just hurt my brain with that."

"Could be," Edward said thoughtfully. He actually did smile at Mel then. "Can't be that bad, can it?"

"Plus if you need family here? You got me," Mel said giving Ed a nudge. "I'm your official big sis, after all."

Edward snorted. "I'll remember that. Thanks for dragging me out," he said grudgingly. "What are we doing out here in a graveyard anyway?"

"Patrolling!" Mel said trying to drum up some enthusiasm. "For vampires!"

"Yeah, but...we haven't seen any."

"Not the point," Mel replied. "There always could be."

"What exactly would we do if we found one?" he asked. "How do you kill 'em?"

"Chop their head off, set them on fire or put a wooden stake in their heart," Mel explained. "Holy water does a number on them too."

"Holy water," Ed scoffed. "What kind of superstition is that?"

"It works," Mel said with a shrug. "Don't ask me how but it does. I mean why do I have these crazy abilities? It doesn't make sense science-wise."

"You train your body to train your mind," Edward said. "And that lets you be stronger than you would otherwise."

"Never had to train," Mel said with a shrug. "Well fighting yeah. But the strength, speed and agility sorta hit when I was ten."

He stared at her. "Seriously?"

"Yep. Other slayers also have this subconscious psychic link thingy. Allows them to dream about past slayers before them," Mel added. "I didn't get that though. My twin brother got that power."

Edward scratched the back of his neck, trying to look at it scientifically. It wasn't really working so well and his face certainly showed it.

"Psychic link, huh? There's gotta be a way to explain that too."

"You find one, you let me know," Mel said shaking her head. "Did I mention the once-a-generation thingie too?"

"Genetic?" he asked instantly,

"I'm not related to any of the other slayers," Mel replied. "And one point they use my handy axe scythe to power up a bunch of potential slayers into full slayers. Who also were never related."
