It was Saturday morning. This meant the Post Office was open.

Moist was looking very, very bored as he leafed through an unclaimed copy of Philately Monthly.

"Stanley would love this," he muttered to Gladys.

Gladys just kept sweeping.

Mary comes in out of curiosity. "Hi there. I've kinda got a weird question," she said. "Do I have to know exactly where someone is to send her a letter?"

Moist looked up and gave her a practised smile. "Anywhere else, that would be a weird question. Here?" He shook his head. "It's not even close. And no, you don't. As long as you've got a name and a vague idea of where she is, the Sorting Engine will get it there."

"I think 'vague' doesn't even begin to describe it," said Mary with a worried look. "It's my friend Nessa. The last time I saw her was two years ago when she was trying to track down her father. When she didn't come back, the only answer I could get from her foster parents was that Nessa and her father were in the witness protection program."

"That might present more of a problem." Quite a large problem, actually, but she sounded as if she'd try, regardless how slim the chance was. It was something he could always recognise. "No one knows how it works, so it could get there. Look at it this way." He spread his hands wide and smiled his most reassuring smile. "Worse thing that happens is she doesn't get it, and you're no worse off than you are now. You might as well try and see what happens."

Mary smiled back, feeling somewhat better. "Guess I'll never know if I don't try. Thank you so much for your time."

Pulling out her ever-present clipboard, she paused to add, "Write letter to Nessa" on her to-do list before heading out to run the rest of her errands.

[No problem!]

Or help her sweep. Whatever.

Okay, stamps are kind of necessary here. Just don't talk to the beasties about licking Vetinari's backside, and you should be fine.
