Book Haven: Monday 10-5PM [6-11-07]

After a marvelous weekend, Lana opened the store in high spirits. She set things out and then began doing some straightening. It's possible that someone who came in might just catch her singing while she worked.

Jude skidded into the bookstore on his skateboard and clutching a pastry box. "Bra, I need your help!"

Lana looked startled. "Jude? Are you okay? What do you need?"

Panting, Jude set down the pastry box. "Okay. I have to make Rikku a birthday cake but I don't know what flavour to do."

"Wow," Lana said. "I, well, I honestly have no idea what she'd like. Chocolate's usually a good bet, though."

"Okay, yeah, that's what I thought. But she really liked the orange creamsicle milkshake I made up, so I tried an orange-peel batter, and a vanilla-cherry one, and . . ." He opened the box to reveal squares of cake in every colour of the rainbow. "Help?"

Lana looked a little bemused. "Um... sure. You made... wow, that's a lot of different kinds of cake."

Jude looked sheepish. "I, uh, got a lot of free time."

Lana grinned. "Okay, let me try. Which first?"

"Uh . . . okay, this one is plain vanilla with orange peel, and this one is chocolate with orange peel," he said, indicating two squares.

She carefully tasted them both. "Oooh, the chocolate with orange peel is very good!"

Jude grinned and bounced a little. "Awesome! Okay, so these two are cherry, and these two are lemon, lime, and orange . . ." He indicated four more squares, bouncing again.

She took small bites of each. "I'm not too thrilled with the lime, but the lemon is great. Sweet, but really tangy too."

"Y' think she'll like the lemon more than the orange?" Jude seemed really worried about this.

"Well, if you go with the chocolate with orange, the lemon would be a nice contrast," Lana said. "But you know her better than I do. If you like the orange better then go with that."

Jude flailed a little bit. "I want this to be perfect!"

"Jude, trust me. She's going to think it's perfect no matter what."

"Really?" he asked, a bit plaintively.

"I guarantee it," she said with a smile. "If Jim tried to make me a cake - any kind - I wouldn't care about anything except that. I'm sure Rikku feels the same way."

"I just want to make it really special," he said a bit awkwardly, but with a dorky smile in place.

"It will be," she said warmly. "You'll see."

"Okay." Jude nodded emphatically. "Thanks for the help, bra. You should totally come and hang out later, we're having a little party."

"I wouldn't miss it," Lana said. "Even if I just stop by for a minute I'll be sure to be there."

"Awesome," he grinned. "Thanks for your help, bra."

"You're welcome. And really, she's going to love it." Lana smiled at him.

"I hope so." He pushed the box towards her. "You can finish those off. I have to go play with food colouring."

"Thanks," Lana said, taking the box. "Good luck."

"Thanks, bra! Catch ya later!" His skateboard clattered down again and he zoomed for the door.

Lana grinned as she watched him go, then set out the rest of the cakes on the plate of goodies for customers.
