Café Fina, Monday

Naminé had had a rather amusing conversation in the past week concerning her specials, and as Lumiere had not objected to her previous experiment, felt confident that her current idea would be acceptable.

The Specials Board read:

HELP US MAKE FINA BEAUTIFUL
Free dessert to anyone who brings in an origami crane
Or another handmade objet d'art

The pepper shaker seemed to approve.

Café Fina was now open.

Charlie came in just before the dinner hour, and stopped to blink around at the decor. "Whoa. Much fancier than expected."

"Charlie! Welcome to Café Fina!" Naminé swept her most professional curtsy. "It's beautiful, isn't it?! Shame you won't get to meet the regular maitre d'. Wonderful man with candles for hands. But the dinnerware will sing to you. Come in!"

Charlie carefully stepped in, and saw the sign advertising the specials. "This is really nice-- candles for hands?" She shook her head, and held up the notebook in her hand. "If I fold a piece of notebook paper into a swan, I can get a free dessert?"

"Yes, and he's very lovely." She dropped her voice slightly. "Everyone here's under an enchantment, or so they said. The dishes and pepper shaker and so on. I assumed they were costumes."

And then laughed. "Can you do that? An origami swan? If so, I'd be delighted to give you a free dessert. Last week it was half-off for artists altogether."

"It's about all I can do, but yes, Grandma used to make me do swans with napkins," Charlie said, carefully removing a page from her notebook. "And I think I remember you telling me about the enchantment. I hope someone can break it for them-- although they do look really cool like this," she added, keeping her voice down.

"They really do," Naminé agreed in an undertone. "But I imagine it gets inconvenient, having candles in place of your fingers."

She raised her voice again as she led Charlie to a table. "And a swan would be lovely, thank you! We will set it on the wall over there. Free dessert, also, is not to be scoffed at. We have white raspberry cheesecake that I have been forcing on people for ages. Ages being the three whole weeks that I've worked here, you understand."

Charlie giggled, and sat down at a table, then carefully folded her notebook page into a swan with outspread wings. "White raspberry cheesecake-- oo, wow. That sounds perfect. I should probably order something small first. Like a dinner salad? Caesar salad with, I don't know? Chicken or salmon or something?"

"Right away! I shall take your order to the kitchen, mademoiselle." She giggled. "I've been wanting to say that, my apologies. And do you have a musical request? The dishes love to sing while your food is being prepared."

"Umm..." Charlie started laughing, then said, "How about Les Poisson? If they've ever heard of that? A song about fish would be good."

"But of course, mademoiselle!" cut in one of the dishes. "One, two, three, one two three!"

The cheese-grater felt his harmonizing was particularly on.

The pepper shaker was convinced the cheese-grater was flat.

Charlie just stared around her, gleeful at the music and being in something like a fairy tale. And hummed under her breath.

Naminé came back a few minutes later with the Caesar salad, giggling a bit at the ensemble music piece going on around her. "I think that I'll get used to it, but I haven't yet. Perhaps a few more weeks and I shall. Bon appetit, which I'm sure I can't say half as well as Lumiere does, but I am getting better."

"It sounds fine to me," Charlie assured her, swaying to the chiming of silverware and warbling of glasses. "And oooo, that looks good. Thanks! I wish I had the money to eat here more than once in a blue moon."

"One of the benefits of working here," Naminé laughed. "When it's quiet, they insist on feeding me. Also if you can think of future specials. Today's was a suggestion from someone. I particularly am fond of arts-themed ones, myself."

"Understandably," Charlie said, carefully digging into her salad, and then being stuck making yummy noises for a few minutes straight. When she finally took a break, she said, "Okay, being fed is definitely as good as big tips. Thanks, guys!" she told the napkins and spinning plates. "Bravo! Very cool music! Ooo. Maybe make that a special? People can sing for their dessert?"

Naminé beamed. "I do enjoy the job, I must say. Although we have no kittens, so I suppose all shops have their perks. And oh, a lovely idea, I shall keep that in mind! Did you have that swan you mentioned earlier? I can add it to the wall and perhaps entice you into some of the white raspberry cheesecake."

Charlie picked it up off the adjoining chair and held it out, sighing happily over her food. "Entice away. If the cheesecake is as good as the salad, I'm going to have to convince people to come here and buy me dessert while I watch them eat dinner."

"Ooooh, it's lovely!" Naminé set the crane on the wall where she'd indicated, and returned with a slice of the cheesecake. "I've a horrible confession: it's better. And luckily we seem to run free dessert specials rather a lot. I've often wondered if people can come in, get a glass of water, and have dessert for free. Do you know, I'm not sure Lumiere would mind?"

Charlie finished her salad, then took careful bite of cheesecake. "Oh. Oh, bliss." She closed her eyes, then licked her lips and smiled in delight. "This is soooo lovely. You'd never have anyone leaving the cafe if you did that. Ever."

"That could be a problem," Naminé laughed. "I'd like for them to go home periodically and bathe, I would imagine. Unless perhaps there's a shower upstairs, in which case, they're more than welcome to camp out. It is exquisite, isn't it?"

"Heavenly," Charlie sighed, trying to keep from licking her fork. She wasn't sure it would appreciate it. "Thank you so much for letting me make an origami bird for this. I feel like I should reciprocate, but since you've already eaten here, there's no way."

"Oh, not at all!" Naminé waved a hand lightly. "Last week it was half-off for all artists, and anyone sketching got a free dessert. I believe they're happiest when they're serving people, and the prices just happen to be numbers on a menu, to them. You made us art, we made you cheesecake, I feel we're quite even. Besides, in a few minutes the cheesecake will be gone, and we get to keep any of the art people bring."

"Then I'm definitely coming back for more dessert," Charlie vowed. "And bringing everyone that was ever nice to me along with me."

Naminé laughed. "I certainly hope you do. We'll be waiting, and I'll be certain they make more of the cheesecake. They always do. I'm being spoiled rotten, I fear."

Or else the world might end. Or Naminé might just put you in one of those freaky memory pods. Same diff.
