John opened the Photo Hut and straightened things up a bit.  When he was finished, he leaned against the counter, eating twizzlers and reading Bitterwoman.

Sabriel had decided that her friends back home would never believe what she told them about Fandom unless she could prove it. She'd been reading up on technology in this place, and she thought a camera was just what she needed. So now she was looking for one.

"Hello?"

John stood up, dropping his comicbook on the counter, thoroughly shocked by the interruption, er customer! "Hey! How can I help you?" he asked.

"I'm looking for a camera to take photographs," Sabriel explained, walking up to the counter. "Do you have those?"

John looked around at the cameras and film all around the counter. "I think I can help you with that."

Sabriel looked politely blank. "Thank you." She waited.

John wondered what she was waiting for. "Is there a specific type of camera you were looking to purchase?" he said eventually.

"One that doesn't cost very much?" Sabriel said, hoping that there were such a thing.

"Very much is kind of relative phrasing," he replied. "Did you want to use the camera for one occasion or forever?"

"I wish to use it more than once, yes." Sabriel nodded.

This girl was gonna make him ask all the questions. "Did you want digital or film?"

Sabriel stared at him. Her readings hadn't covered this. "Um. I don't know what that means?"

"Well," John was really really bad at explaining things. "Film is a really old way of getting pictures and digital is a new way."

Yeah, Sabriel didn't get much wiser from that. "Perhaps I should start with film. I have never used a camera before."

"Well, you're in for a treat," he reached behind the counter and pulled out a small 35mm camera. Blowing the dust off the box he said, "This one should do just about anything you'd like and isn't very expensive at all."

Sabriel smiled. "Anything?"

"Well, it takes pictures and has a flash and stuff," he said not so sure she wasn't messing with him.

Sabriel blinked at him. "The flash is the light, right?"

John nodded, "Yes. It makes it so you can see the pictures when you have them developed."

"Can I have them developed here or do I need to learn how to do it?" Sabriel was sure she could if she had to.

"Oh no, we do that here. You just drop the film off and then come pick it up when the pictures are ready. Easy as pie," he assured her.

She held her hand out for the box. "May I have a look?"

"Oh, right! Sure!" He offered it up for her perusal.

"This looks good," Sabriel decided after fiddling with it and reading the text on the box. "I'll take it. Do I need anything else?"

"Uh, you're gonna need some film," John said, rummaging again for some antiquated equipment. "There you are," he held out a three pack of film that would work in her camera.

"Thank you," Sabriel said, smiling. "How much is this?"

"Some low, handwavey amount," he said.

Sabriel handed over the correct amount. "Thank you for your assistance." She smiled. "Aren't we in the same workshop?"

"Are we?" John wasn't very good at paying attention to who was in his classes.

"Aren't you in Flight?" Sabriel was almost sure she'd seen that hair before.

"Oh yeah! I love that class!" he exclaimed. At least she hadn't remembered him by his hair.

"I don't think I'm doing so well," Sabriel said wryly.
