Turtle & Canary; Tuesday [ 06/12 ]

There wasn't really any rhyme or reason to it, but there was a sale today on toasters, paper towels, and wood glue. If anything, it made for a great beginning to the letter she was working on writing to her sister back home.

She also re-did the glitter on the "Help Wanted" sign in the window.

Today's Squishy flavors: Toaster, Wood Glue, Red.

After getting a look at the Squishy flavors today, Turtle thinks she knows who to blame for the odd specials.

...yeah, I gots nothin'.

"Good day, Miss Wexler," Dale said upon entering the store. "I don't suppose you can direct me to the double A batteries?"

"Hi, Agent Cooper," Turtle gave the investigator guy a small smile. "They're right over there on that display at the end of Aisle ~~Handwavey~~. Not just double A, either, but all kinds of batteries."

Including one row of a brand that packaged only one at a time with a small cube of salt. That's right. A salt and battery cases.

Dale returned to the counter with a ton of batteries. With the salt cubes.

He's already talking into his tape recorder. "Diane, please remind me to investigate the manufacturers of a certain battery for using bad puns for their marketing."

He then gave Turtle a grin. "So how are you doing today, Miss Wexler?"

"Hey, now," Turtle couldn't help giggling a little. "Bad puns are a great marketing scheme. You're buying 'em, aren't you?" She started scanning each of the packs separately, because she figured that'd be easier than counting all of them and entering them into the register that way. "And I'm doing good, thanks. How about you, Agent Cooper? Things so boring around the station that the GameBoy's run dead?"

Dale chuckled as he held up his tape recorder for Turtle to see. "I'm doing well and no, mo Gameboy's to speak of. I tend to run at the mouth a lot and my tape recorder goes through a lot of batteries."

"Ohhhh, I see," Turtle paused for a moment, looking thoughtful as she considered what was more important. A satisfied customer or a higher turn-over of purchases. However, the was also the consideration that batteries were often bought, thus pushing the product off the shelf quickly, while battery chargers...

"You know, if you go through them so quickly, it might be a wise investment to get a battery charger. The chargable batteries are more expensive, but, after a while, the initial higher price will be significantly cheaper than always replacing them. I can show you a chart?" She really hoped she could show him a chart.

Dale? Actually a big fan of charts.

"I'd be happy to see a chart," Dale said looking interested. "However my experience with rechargable batteries in the past is that they did not hold their charge for a significant amount of time and that after a certain period of being recharged over and over again they would have to be replaced."

Turtle halted her very excited scramble for paper and magic markers (which were always on hand at the counter) to tilt her head. "Huh. I guess I didn't think about that..." She frowned down at her chart-making folder in her hand. There was a badly drawn unicorn on it. No. She'll still make a chart. Folder went on the counter and she flipped it open and started to work. "I can't vouch for the length of battery life when charged or the charge eventually going kaputt, but I can vouch for this. The blue represents the steady incline of spending with regular batteries, starting at ~~handwavey price~~ and consistently going up....And the red represents the chargable stuff, which is going to start up here, a lot higher than just the regular ones buuuuuut...." Her tongue stuck out a bit as she tried to make her line as straight as possible, "you have no other extraneous charges until mayyyybe....here...ish....when they ultimately lose their juice and you have to pick up a new one, but then you can still use the charger and, look, at this point, it's still cheaper than the blue line."

She settled back; it was a good chart. She turned it so Dale could see it better.

Dale surveyed the chart with some amusement. "All right Miss Wexler. You've sold me on the concept. I'll take a battery charger, a dozen rechargeable batteries and a dozen mini-cassettes for my little tape recorder here."

"Apu, you heard the man, go get the stuff," Turtle said, pushing the right buttons to cancel out all the other batteries and then started moving them into a neat pile to put back later. "You're still using mini-cassettes? How old is that thing?"

"Well it was fairly new in 1990," Dale replied. "I bought it at an electronics emporium. There was a leasing option but I felt complete ownership was the way to go. It's an invaluable tool in the investigative process."

Turtle's eyes went a little wide. That thing was older than she was! "Have you ever considered updating to digital? We've got a good selection of those. Will give you better recording quality and probably will record a lot more than those little mini-cassettes, although those mini-cassettes are super-cute."

"Digital, you say?" Dale asked looking intrigued. "Interesting. Some were just coming out in my time period but Consumer Reports suggested waiting until the technology was more advanced before investing."

"They've had about seventeen years to advance," Turtle grinned. "I think they're a little more ready for wear. In fact..." It was at this point that Turtle delved into a rather detailed little spiel on some of the advancements in digital recording systems and how now is probably a key time to invest, based on some of what she's read. She gave a disclaimer, though, that, while she had been following technology like a hawk, she hasn't been paying that much attention to the recorders, so she's a little iffy on details, but it might be something to look into. "Should I have Apu bring some over from electronics to get a look at?"

She bounced a little. She loved when she got to press further purchases and investments on customers so much!

"Let's have a look," Dale said with a nod. "So I assume that with digital voice improvements that mobile phones are also at a higher standard?"

Turtle snorted a bit. "From 1990? Oh, yeah." She even had an impressive ~~and totally handwaved~~ statistic to back it up before she leaned she asked over the PA system that Apu bring up some of the recorders, too. "You can get the phones here, but we don't have anything to provide the phone service and stuff. Especially if you're calling to different dimensions. I have no clue how they manage to do that around here..."

A grim look crossed Dale's face when contacting different dimensions was mentioned. "I'll be find with the standard service for this dimension apparently. Now can these Digital recorders be attached to a personal computer?"

"Assuming your computer isn't from 1990, as well, then, yeah, I think so. You'll have to have..." Turtle had to stop a moment because of her heart jumping up at the possibility of this sale getting even bigger "...all the updated technology to correspond with the technology of the recorder. But, I assure you, the improvements will be well worth the expenses."

"I have a computer that is up to date at the station," Dale said picking up one of the digital recorders in his hand.

It felt... weird. He looked at his old recorder sitting on the counter and felt like he was betraying an old friend.

"Good, good," Turtle nodded at them already having an updated computer, trying not to let the disappointment show in her face. Then she saw the look on Dale's face and glared slightly down at the old recorder. She wasn't going to let that thing ruin this sale!

Dale did not notice any glaring. He played with the digital recorder's settings for a moment and then looked at Turtle. "Do you mind if I test it out?"

Turtle reminded herself that allowing the customer to be well-informed assisted in sales over-all and allowed for a sense of security in the consumer-provider relationship. She drew in a breath. "Not at all. Just let me hop into the back room to" ...type up... "get a release form and we can give you a trial period."

"Actually I was just hoping to try one 'entry' on it," Dale replied. "Just to get a feel for it. Would you mind?"

"Oh!" Turtle snorted; she should really be selling cars. "Yeah, knock yourself out."

Dale fumbled slightly with the record button before getting it started. "Diane, I'm currently trying out an Olympus VN-4100PC digital recording device, a possible replacement for my current handheld device. I've been assured by Miss Wexler that it has superior voice recording ability and according to the box can hold up to 144 hours of uninterrupted audio. Even I wonder if I can talk that long. It's lightweight. Compact. And any audio files can be transferred to a computer for offline storage. It even has a timer for it to start and stop recording on its own. Overall a remarkable device."

Dale stopped recording and then played it back to himself nodding at the clarity.

"Ms. Wexler, I do believe you have a sale."

"Yayyyyy," Turtle chuckled a little, slightly because she'd been trying to hold back doing so through the sample recording. She bounced a little, certainly never one to shy away from expressing her happiness to have a satisfied customer. "I'm glad you like it, Agent Cooper, sir," she beamed as she rang him up.

"Well you are quite the good salesperson," Dale said pulling out his wallet to pay for the purchase. "A rare quality in this day and age."

Turtle positively beamed at praise like that. Any sort of praise, really, but especially that kind. "Thank you! We've all gotta be good at something, right?"
