The Arms Hotel Lobby, Thursday afternoon

It had taken three people and a German-to-English dictionary, but eventually the Arms Hotel staff was able to explain to Gunther what "vegan" really meant and why last night's radio broadcast had people expecting health food at the new restaurant. Once he understood, though, he was furious. It was time for action, not another one of Mary's marketing surveys.

So Gunther dragged several tables from the shuttered restaurant into the lobby and put out a heaping plate of hamburgers along with napkins and cans of soda. He directed the kitchen staff to keep making more burgers until they collapsed from exhaustion. Gunther also put a sign up outside the lobby.

If Gunther had been paying attention, he might have noticed that the pages of the antique guest register at the desk were turning as if they were being flipped by an invisible hand.

The lobby is open for anyone checking in or out or looking for free burgers.

Stan? Saw the sign. And? Fan of burgers.

"One, please," he said.

"Not bad. Has this been marinated?" he asked.

"Is very good. Cooked without being raw or burned, so you're better than I at that," he said with a smile. "Is thatDijon mustard?"

"It's good. Can I... have another?" Stan unconsciously patted his belly as an external cue that he was obviously suffering from separation anxiety and was filling that void with thermodynamically treated bovine meat. Or that he was hungry.

Stan polished this one off rapidly. It was as good as the first. "Excellent food. I fear if I stay any longer, I'd have trouble fitting through the door." He looked longingly at the food before shaking his head no.
