Groovy Tunes; Monday [ 06/18 ]

Coming into work today, Chad's only regret was that it wasn't the end of the week, because then he could make a really bad joke about Caturday. Prince Oscar Pedro Neko-kun (Pause) the Third accompanied him into work today, so that he could meet and play with Flopsy, Mopsy and...the other one. If he didn't start remembering that other cat's name soon, he was just going to start calling him Joe.

He's so not getting any work done around the cats today...

Prince Oscar Pedro is having way too much fun climbing on the bigger cats. Surprisingly, they were allowing it. Perhaps because they were too confused not to. The three of them had enough fluff and fur to make up for Oscar Pedro's lack thereof.

I stole Charlie's OCD! MWA HA HA!

Thief! Borrower without asking! Kitten collector!

After lunch, Charlie stopped by Groovy Tunes to meet Chad's new kitten. "Hey! And... wow." She stared. "Is that your new cat?" It might something that wandered in off the street. You never knew.

Especially with Chad, who probably would let anything remotely kitten-like follow him in from the streets.

"Yup," Chad beamed a little, shoulders straightening, as a failed attempt to chew on Flopsy's ear resulted in the hairless kitten taking a tumble. "That's Prince Oscar Pedro."

Charlie managed (just barely) not to laugh at the impressive name, and said instead, "Um. I have never seen a cat that looked that-- naked. Has he been shaved?" she wondered, picking up Mopsy, who was looking hypnotized by Prince Oscar Pedro's tail.

And to think, Chad had given Charlie the shortened version. "Nope; comes like that. Sphinx breed is what they're called. No hair on 'em. Naked as the day they were born."

"Hunh." She couldn't help but grin as Prince Oscar Pedro intimidated Cottontail into giving up a shaft of sunlight to him. "He's definitely got the right name. And he's kind of-- I don't know." Cute would be pushing it, but... "He's very defenseless looking. I can see why you picked him."

Chad would definitely go with cute, in a heartbeat. It was evident in his expression. Although muted behind his usually stoic facade, there was undeniable admiration there in the curl of the corner of his mouth as he watched the hairless kitten. "He was so happy," he said, "when all I was doin' was pettin' him..."

"I think he likes it here," he decided.

Flopsy was growling at Prince Oscar Pedro, but not going any closer. Cottontail was just looking confused. "Pets are great," Charlie had to agree. "And the others don't seem to hate him?" She held out her fingers to him to sniff. "Does he like other people?"

In response to the growl, Prince Oscar Pedro was ducking his head, making sure that any more advances toward the other cat were made carefully, but then noticed the distraction of people-fingers and went to go sniff, poking his nose in the air, staccato, as if worried about getting too close.

"Oh, he loves people," Chad said. Almost as if on cue, Prince Oscar Pedro looked up at Charlie and let out a scratchy meow, bulging eyes hopeful.

"Awwwwww," Charlie said, not quite as soft a touch as Chad, but that's pretty impossible. Still, she rubbed his head with one finger, and then very carefully scratched behind his ears. "I almost don't want to scratch him because his skin looks so delicate. Kind of... well, pathetic-looking, you know?"

The staccato motor-like purring started up almost immediately as Prince Oscar Pedro closed his eyes and nudged his head closer into the scratches.

"He's tough," Chad assured her. "He can take it."

Giggling, Charlie continued petting the kitten, then asked, "Oscar Pedro. Is he named after anyone, or did it just sound cool?"

Chad shrugged. "I thought it sounded cool. His full name is Prince Oscar Pedro Neko-kun the Third. Oscar Pedro is for my Mexican side, Neko-kun is for my Japanese side, the third just felt like it should be there, and he had to be a prince."

"Yeah, that part's obvious," Charlie said, grinning. "You're half-Japanese? That's cool."

Chad arched an eyebrow at her. Not that it could be seen with his hair, though, of course. "Sado isn't exactly a Mexican name. Or Yasutora."

He paused, realizing that Charlie might not know that. "That's my real name. Yasutora. Chad's just a nickname."

IS IT CAN BE CATURDAY NAOW?

"Ohhh." Charlie tilted her head, still stroking Prince Oscar Pedro's nose. "Not much diversity in Hastings Glen. So I wouldn't be able to guess. Have you lived in Mexico or Japan?"

The more Charlie paid attention to him, the more Prince Oscar Pedro was moving in toward the girl. Wouldn't be long before he was starting to climb up her a little.

"Both," Chad answered. "Went back and forth a lot, 'til I was eight, then I was in Mexico for a while, then back to Japan for middle school, and now I'm here in the States..."

"Did you like it?" Charlie asked, looking at the kitten and patting it on the head. Once you got used to it, he was kind of appealing. "We lived in Ohio when I was little, then New York City for a few months. Then Hastings Glen." With six months in Longmont, Virginia, but she mad an effort to forget that, every chance she could. "Which place did you like best?"

Chad gave her a soft smile. "Would be impossible to choose."

Charlie smiled back, then patted Prince Oscar Pedro's head again. "Cool. I don't know where I want to end up."

The motor purring from the kitten seemed nonstop. His paws were kneading happily against the floor.

"I just plan on being wherever I end up," Chad said, although that wasn't entirely truthful. He had an idea of where he might want to be, but none of them were things he wanted to say outloud, because that meant committing to them, and committing to them would mean failure if they didn't happen.

Charlie was chuckling at the kitten now, and rubbed a knuckle under his head. "Entitled little thing, aren't you?" she asked. "I'd like New York City, I think. But it's been a while since I lived there, and it's really expensive... so I'd have to have a really good job."

Prince Oscar Pedro's rubbed his head into the knuckle. Entitled little thing, indeed.

"Doing what?" Chad asked.

"Not sure." Charlie frowned, listening to the kitten purr, thinking. "Something where I could write. Maybe a teaching job? I don't know." She smiled. "But I don't have to figure it out yet, so that's okay."

"Yeah, definitely got some time. What kind of stuff you write?"

"Little bit of everything," Charlie said. "I'm working on kind of a science fiction story now." She grinned. "About a place where lots of different aliens and superheroes meet for vacations. A resort in the mountains, near the ocean. It's not really very coherent yet."

Chad grinned a little. "So pretty much...Fandom Hotel."

Charlie grinned. "Pretty much, yeah. Although slightly weirder. Slightly."

"I'll believe it," Chad said, "when I read it."

"Maybe I'll let you read part of it, sometime." Charlie smiled mischeviously, giving the kitten one last pat before standing up. "The part where they invade the flying saucer, maybe." She looked around. "Bring Prince Oscar Pedro by to play with Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail on a day I'm working, and I'll probably have my notebook with me."

"Sounds like a plan. I think he like 'em a lot, too, so he'll be happy to come play again."
