The Graveyard: Sunday Evening

Mel is in a good mood. Not that she's skipping through the graveyard or anything, but compared to the last week she's definitely in a better mood.

And if anyone implies about a certain not-boyfriend being the reason for the change her mood will probably change drastically.

"You bet!" Rikku was totally skipping, and not in denial about it or anything. "I totally nailed some people with grenades, in paintball! And those workshops today were so cool. I went to the fireworks thing and the sniper one. Did you have fun!?"

"Started off kind of bad," Mel said trying to hide a grin. "Definitely got better as the weekend went on."

"Ooooh, really?" Rikku giggled. "Something cheer you up, then? I bet it wasn't the paintball!"

"No," Mel agreed. "Definitely not paintball. Just... y'know. Stuff."

"Stuff?" Rikku grinned. "Does 'stuff' mean 'so there's this guy ...'?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Mel said firmly and trying not to smile.

"Mmmmmm." Rikku nodded. "'Cause see usually, when weekends go from crappy to fantastic that quickly? The story starts 'so there's this guy,' and then goes to 'but he was being really stupid' and then gets the happy ending of 'he stopped being stupid and there was smooching. A lot.'"

Mel gave a small embarrassed cough. "Yeah. Not sure how that relates to me but... yeah. So. Camping? Fun."

Rikku laughed. "Okay. Totally didn't happen to you. You're happy for other reasons."

She bounced a little on her toes. "I got in a quality nap earlier, so I'm good to go. I didn't used to nap this much, y'know. I think maybe Jude's part-cat or something."

"Naps are always rocketship," Mel agreed. "And this being the place that it is, Jude probably is half-cat. Does he purr? Occasionally get hair balls?"

"He sleeps all the time. I go to pester him and he's asleep and I end up curling up with him and foom, it's naptime." She considered for a moment. "No hairballs, but, uh, he totally purrs sometimes."

That's not a mischevious evil grin. Much.

"Does he purr if you rub him in the right spot?" Mel teases. "You know. Behind the ears."

"I find it helps more if you nibble," Rikku nodded. "Although belly scratches get you way more of a mellow kinda purr."

"Hmmm. I'll have to remember that one," Mel said without thinking.

Then she eyed Rikku sternly after she realized what she said. "Not that there's anyone I'd do that to."

"Of course not," Rikku said quickly. "Never occurred to me."

She looked away for a second and then back again, blushing. "Uh. Not that I'm much help anyway, 'cause ... that's kinda where my expertise runs out."

Mel gave Rikku a good-natured grin. "Expertise isn't always the best thing to have. Enthusiasm counts for a lot."

Rikku blushed harder, but laughed. "I'll keep that in mind. We, uh, we seem to be okay on the enthusiasm front. Although it kinda teeters between 'gung ho' and 'ahhhh holy crap run away' so ..." She laughed again. "Having all kinds of fun."

Mel gave a heavy sigh.

"Yeah. I can relate to that," she agreed. "Though my fun tends to get mixed up with confusion and yelling."

"Oh." Rikku looked over sympathetically. "Ouch. We, uh, just jump straight to the misunderstandings and 'did I rush you?' and 'no, no, I totally pressured you there' instead of realizing, y'know, that we both kinda wanted to and not overthinking things like crazy people because dude."

She scratched her head, wondering how that sentence had gotten away from her so badly. "Uh, what's the ... confusion and yelling?"

Mel gave Rikku a look as if sizing her up on a trust basis and then just gave in.

"Zuko. He and I tend to... argue. A lot. Which usually leads to us making out and... then late confusion. Does that make sensE?"

Rikku mulled that over for a minute. "Kinda. It's a love/hate thing, you mean? I've known people like that. Where one minute you think they're gonna beat each other up and just as you're hiding under something, they're already off groping or whatever." She shrugged. "It works for some people. Gets their blood going, you know?"

"Yeah... that kind of like us. I guess," Mel considered. "Though-"

Mel paused for a moment.

"Eh. I dunno. It just works."

"That's what matters, right? I mean. If it works, then ... it works. Yeah?" She chewed her lip. "I mean, if it does, then who cares what anybody else thinks?"

"Right. It's weird and non-committal and yet committed," Mel said and then screwed up her face. "Maybe I should be committed for saying that."

"Well, I think the question is ... what do you want? Like, do you want it to be committed, or not?" Rikku shrugged again. "'Cause either way's fine, so long as you both agree, right?"
