Luke's Diner; Wednesday [ 07/11 ]

For his shift today, A.J. was pensive and distracted and it showed in the fifty million little origami paper napkin birds he was making and setting on all the tables and, after he'd managed to find some string, hanging a couple of them from the ceiling. If anyone paid particular attention to the very, very, very small details, they'd notice most of the marked with the name Corey. It was A.J.'s penance for where a certain innocent little pizza date. Each finished bird was supposed to encapsulate a whispered apology heading north and back about a decade.

And then A.J. realized he was thinking about time traveling apologies of karma energy, and thunked his head on the counter. He was losing it.

After a while, he really had started losing it, as the apology birds were now becoming war birds, and the ones on one side of the diner were having a war against the ones on the other.

Millie popped in to get something to eat and wondered bemusedly about what might happen if she brought all of the birds to life. It was an almost overwhelming temptation.

Spare the poor boy, please! He was still boggling every single time he walked by a calender and saw the year. "Hi!" he greeted the woman with a smile. "How can I help you?"

"I was hoping you might sell something spicy here. I am so craving some sort of spicy food," Millie said hopefully.

"I'm sure we've got some," A.J. said, giving her a smile as he helpfully handed over a menu. "Still not that familiar with the menu; I just started, but, if we dont' have anything spicy enough for your tastes," he turned around, snatching up a bottle, tossing it to his other hand, and then spinning it a little on the counter so that the label faced her, "well, that's why we've got Tabasco."

"Tabasco?" Millie said curiously. "I'm not familiar with that. Is it some sort of spice?"

"Kinda," A.J. nodded, leaning on the counter a little as he looked at the bottle, turning it a little, "it's a sauce. Usually, you add it to Mexican food, but I've seen it in almost everything. I know one kid who puts it in his milk. Which?" He grinned up at Millie. "I don't recommend."

"I can not imagine wanting spicy milk," Millie admitted. "Do you have any of this... Mexican? food here?"

"I'm not entirely sure," A.J. admitted, with a bit of a pout, reaching for a menu himself and giving it a quick scan. "Looks like we can get you a decent plate of nachos...ooh, burritos, too. Vegetarian, even. Not bad..."

Now A.J. was making himself a little hungry.

"That sounds wonderful," Millie said cheerfully. "Nachos and burneetos!"

"Great!" A.J. beamed at a successful sale. "We'll have that up for you in just a bit, ma'am." He bounced over to the kitchen and got the order placed.

While he was doing that, Millie poured a drop of the tabasco sauce onto her finger and tried it. Oh my, yes! She'd have to be buying some of that!

"Order up!" A.J. announced when the food was ready (those kitchen boys were pretty quick...), and placed the plates in front of his customer. "Bon apitite!" he declared, with flair.

Millie tucked into the food happily and found it just to her taste - with the judicious application of a little tabasco sauce. "Oh, this is wonderful!" she exclaimed happily. "Thank you so much!"

"You're quite welcome!" A.J. said. "Glad to help. It is my job, after all."

Millie finished up and paid her bill, leaving a generous tip for A.J. "I shall definitely come again another time," she said. "This was quite wonderful!"

Such praise was definitely encouraging for the boy's second day of work, and to get him over his moping effectively as well. A.J. positively beamed. "Excellent! I'll look forward to seeing you in the near future, then, ma'am!"

She smiled and waved as she left. And couldn't quite resist bringing one of the small origami birds to life as she left the diner. Not that A.J. necessarily saw it, of course. It perched cheerily on her shoulder and would no doubt be interesting company for Proudfoot.

Smartly staying away from the crazy kid with the napkin birds.
