The Perk, noon, Thursday

Sabriel had received Raphael's voicemail, and found the papers he given her. She was now sitting by a table in the Perk, drinking ridiculously expensive tea and studying the papers. To her relief it seemed like PJ would be a low maintenance pet. She'd have to stop by the shop and see if it had any crickets though.

After class River had gone for a walk, stopping at the Perk for a coffee. She noticed Sabriel, the girl she'd talked briefly to yesterday and smiled to her.

Sabriel smiled back, and gave a little wave. "Want to join me?"

River's smile widened and she picked up her coffee and walked over to Sabriel's table and sat down. "Spiders make beautiful webs," she said. "Used to watch them in my parent's garden."

Sabriel looked down at her papers. "I don't think PJ makes webs. Or, does he?" She started scanning the pages, looking for confirmation. "There's still spiders in your future?"

River looked a little disappointed. "What's it's purpose in life if it can't make webs? Yes, there are spiders."

"Eating bugs and small animals it seems," Sabriel said, a little amused. "And hiding."

"Eating is a necessity, not a purpose," River replied. "Hiding? I'd prefer spinning webs."

"It leaves more of an impression on the world," Sabriel nodded.

Looking thoughtful, River replied: "For a short while only."

"It's not permanent, no. But certainly it's more visible to the world, than hiding in a burrow is." Sabriel smiled and sipped her tea. It was a slightly strange conversation, but enjoyable.

River smiled back and lifted her mug to her lips. "Striving for permanence is futile. Trying to catch all the moments and store them hurts my head."

"Photographs can help you remember," Sabriel noted. "I have a camera now," she added with some pride.

Sipping her coffee, River fell silent for a moment. "Photographs are like markers for memories. A cropped visual reference only. But still useful."

Sabriel considered that. "It is flawed. And, of course, you can't really make people understand by looking at the photos."

"Need guidance, or interpretation can cause misunderstandings. Any plans for the spider?" River sipped her coffee again.

Sabriel shrugged. "Keep it alive until the end of the workshop?"

"Should be manageable," River replied. "Unless you have other pets who obejct."

"Thankfully I don't. If I had a cat or something, I might have problems. Do you have any pets?"

"Buffy, my roommate, and I have a tentacled monster named Berthold. I think he qualifies as a pet."

Sabriel paused. "A tentacled monster?"

"Contrary to popular belief tentacled monsters can be kindhearted and shy." River smiled. "And be obsessed with ice cream"
