"Sorry I'm late!" said Mary, rushing into the lobby. "I overslept."

"That's it? Sauerkraut?" asked Mary, looking puzzled.

Gunther grunted in response. "You vant to pick the specials? You wake up early and cook like I do."

Johnny wandered in after workshops and looked at the Today's Specials, declaring, "I don't want sauerkraut."

"I'm hoping Gunther is just saving up his culinary genius for later in the week," said Mary. "We just landed a big catering job for Friday."

He grinned at Mary, "Hey you. And is that right? Where at?"

"We're catering the Policeman's Ball on Friday night," said Mary, excited.

"Policeman's Ball, heh. Cool. I guess this is just for all the adults to attend?"

"I really don't know," said Mary. "I haven't gotten a lot of details yet. But half this island's population are students, so I can't imagine them being excluded."

Johnny nodded and smiled slowly at her, "How've you been? Haven't talked to you since our three minutes at Caritas."

"I've been busy," said Mary, smiling. "Someone new checked in last week and she's been ultra high maintenance, so she's required my personal attention. I thought I was done with the high rollers, but I guess not. I had to find a presidential suite and a steady supply of champagne and caviar."

"One of them type, huh? I'd like to meet her," he said with a wicked wink. "'Course I do not do the whole caviar thing. That's just gross."

"I hear on the radio that you've been pretty busy yourself," said Mary, carefully watching for his reaction.

"You have?" He quirked a brow. "Never trust a squirrel, Mary. They're devious creatures."

"They certainly are," said Mary. "I don't know what to believe and what not to believe."

"So, why don't you just ask me if you want to know if something's true or not?" he asked, eyeing her. "If it pertains to me, of course."

Mary smiled tentatively. "Maybe you could tell me what's really going on with you and Savannah?"

Mary was jealous? Couldn't be. "Savannah and I like to hang out. We date occassionally. I see people, she see's people. Pretty simple, Mary."

"So you guys aren't... What I'm trying to say is that I don't want to get hurt," said Mary.

"Exclusive? No, we aren't," he said low, studying her. "Have I hurt you, Mary?"

"No, you haven't," Mary was quick to reassure him. "It's just that I've been hurt enough times by other guys that I really cared about."

Whoa. What was she saying here? "I think we need to smooth the pavement here, sweetheart." Johnny was trying to be very careful here what he said. "Why don't you tell me how you feel about me."

Mary hadn't planned on admitting to anything, so she backpedaled. "You've been a really good friend and I'm glad that I met you," she said, carefully omitting a few things.

Which only made Johnny grin and duck his head a bit. She wasn't going to say anything and that was fine with him. "Same here, Mary."

Mary felt it was time for a change of subject.

"So tell me about this new temporary principal. Is she as bad as I've heard?"

I have nothing to say.
