The Arms Hotel Lobby, Wednesday

It was going to be one of those days. Mary had run out to Wonka's before her shift and picked up a pound of chocolate. She finished it within thirty minutes and started pestering Gunther for more.

"Gunther! We have to have more chocolate somewhere in this hotel! What kind of chef are you if you don't keep extra chocolate around?"

For his part, Gunther hadn't seen Mary this agitated in a while. Come to think of it, it had been a month since the last time he'd heard whining like this. He made a note to order extra chocolate in 28 days, just in case.

"Bit of a theme today?" Stan asked with a smile.

"Yes, it's my very own personal chocolate festival," said Mary.

"Is it open to just anyone, or just people named Mary?" he said with a smile.

"Hmmm," said Mary, thinking. "I guess it's open to anyone willing to put up with my mood swings today."

"I'll have to brave it, then," he said. "Chocolate is worth it.

"How have you been, stranger?" asked Mary.

"I've been well, stranger," he returned. "Things are quiet. Wonder if being here is even worth it, since my clients don't show up half the time."

Mary hadn't been to the park yet. "Waffle undies? Umm, no. And don't look at me. I'm not one of your clients so I don't have to show up," she added with a giggle.

"Well, now," he said, "you should be keeping up your appointment on the mainland. Gentle chiding, mind you. If I have to take a phone call asking why you haven't been doing your homework, you may have to be grounded," he said with a twinkle in his eye.

"I've been keeping them, but if you'd like the company, I can start showing up at your office too," said Mary.

"Only if you lie on the couch and tell me about your family. Or make something up. Hell, at this point, I'd challenge you to a game of Battleship to get through the day."

"I can make stuff up," said Mary, bouncing. She's had way too much chocolate. "Did I ever tell you about the time I planned a wedding for a mob boss's daughter? Now that was one screwed up family.

"Really. Did it include a horse's head cake?" Bouncy Mary is definitely a sight to behold.

"Nope, but the bride walked down the aisle to a recording of Bon Jovi's 'Livin' On A Prayer' and she requested a diamond-encrusted cake," said Mary. "But the groom's dad was so eager not to see his son marry into the mob that he robbed a Harry Winston representative in the parking lot to try and derail the wedding."

"I'm sorry... did you just say 'robbed someone to derail a wedding' or am I just imagining things?" he said. "Sounds like a class act all around."

"Seriously, he did," insisted Mary. "The groom's parents were this totally straight-laced couple who were totally freaked out by their new in-laws. So somehow the dad got this idea that if he put on a ski mask and robbed the Harry Winston rep, the bride's mafia family would get blamed. It nearly worked, too, except my Danny ran a really sharp surveillance team. They matched the thief's shoes in the security video to the shoes that the dad was wearing."

"Did you give him a commendation or a punch on the arm for finding the right guy?"

"Actually, I was all hands-off that week. Danny had his hands full with Delinda," said Mary. "Besides, I was busy enough trying to persuade Ed to apologize to Wayne Newton."

"What happened with Wayne Newton?" he asked.

"The million-dollar wedding package included Wayne Newton singing at the reception, but Wayne and Ed had a falling out over some argument they had over a golf game." Mary frowned, adding, "Don't ask me to explain it. I couldn't understand what the big deal was. Anyway, Wayne refused to do it until Ed publicly apologized."

"What, Don Ho wasn't available on such short notice," he teased, eyes twinkling, humming 'tiny bubbles'.

"Nope, he was already booked at the Montecito Hawaiian Villas. Besides, we had advertised the package with Wayne Newton and the bride's father was a huge fan," said Mary. "Not to mention I didn't want to be the victim of a mafia hit because I couldn't produce the entertainer he wanted."

Mary loved Las Vegas, but she had to admit that it could be a very wacky place.

"Being the victim of a mafia hit would tend to put a damper on business," he nodded.

"Yeah, especially in Vegas these days. The gaming commission doesn't like that kind of stuff," said Mary.

"Not to mention it's a bit difficult for most people to come back to work after being involved in a fatality. Especially if it is your own...excepting the band at Caritas."

"You'd be surprised," said Mary. "The Montecito used to owned by a woman named Monica Mancuso. After she fell off the roof and died, supposedly her ghost came back and went after deadbeats who didn't pay their bar tab."

"That is a woman with drive and dedication to her work. Is it true? Or just rumors created so people wouldn't skip out on the tab?"

"Maybe a little bit of both," said Mary. "Two rumors started up at once. One was started by the scam artist who bought her condo and was trying to sell it at a profit. The other was a deadbeat who skipped out on an $80 tab, then tried to convince me to comp his room because Monica's ghost traumatized him and stole his money clip. Security eventually recovered his money clip but there was $80 missing."

Mary shrugged. "All I know is bookings rose 40% based on the rumors and I make a killing with the Haunted Places of Las Vegas tour I started."

"I've heard of similar things in other places. There's a haunted Chicago tour, I believe, that delves into the history of the city and explores local legends. Sounds like good business practice to me," he said.

"This is probably going to sound like a stupid question, but have you ever heard of Monica Mancuso?" asked Mary. "Because she was really big news, or at least she was in my world. You know, ambitious gorgeous young woman marries 80-year-old billionaire and inherits a fortune when he dies, and then she suddenly dies herself under mysterious circumstances?"

"The name doesn't sound familiar...Wait, was this recent or was this a few decades ago? There's... I can't recall her name, but I think I do. Or at least someone similar. Now...what was her name...?"

"She died just two years ago. You would remember if you saw her. Brunette, very pretty, but very very skinny."

"I think so. Dispute over who inherits her money, as well?"

"Nope, she was smart enough to leave an updated will with very clear instructions," said Mary. "She left everything to a foundation for the blind. Ed was executor of her estate and one of her waitress friends chose how to distribute her ashes. We flushed them down the toilet in her suite."

Stan laughed at that. Barking laughter, as it was not expected.

"You're joking?"

"I'm not kidding! We all gathered in the bathroom of Monica's suite, her friend Norma poured the ashes into the toilet, and Ed flushed them," said Mary with a straight face.

"I think you're pulling my chain. That you pulled the chain on her," he said with a smile.
