Café Fina, Thursday

Two days. Two days without her sketchbook, of not being able to lose herself in art. Two days of fumbling clumsily to change clothes or shower or dress herself. Two days of reaching to pick up something and having it fall to the floor.

Naminé was furious.

But she had to open Fina, so she stormed in rather angrily and shot daggers at anyone who asked what the matter was. Which was very unfair, but ... she'd been itching to sketch for two days now to relieve some of this frustration, and the fact that she couldn't only made everything worse.

She grasped the marker in her mouth in order to sloppily write today's ... not-so-specials:

The message on the specials board concerned Steve somewhat, so he stopped in to, well, ask. "Namine? Is something wrong?"

Naminé bobbed her head lightly to Mr. Rogers, looking slightly chastened. "I suppose that's terribly rude of me, isn't it?" she asked, regarding the sign. "My apologies. I'm a bit frustrated. I seem to have incurred our acting principal's wrath."

She held up her hands, fingers hanging limply.

Steve stared in silent horror at Namine's fingers. "She did that to you?"

"I broke her rules, and protested some of her rather odious decrees," Naminé said fiercely. "This is to be my punishment. I haven't the least idea how long it will last, but not being able to sketch right now isn't helping my general frustration."

Steve wanted to say something reassuring to Namine. Unfortunately, his urge to kill was rising at the thought of that odious woman using her position of authority to do something like that to a child. "I see," he said. "Excuse me. I...have to go." To hit something. "I hope it wears off soon. Whatever it is."

"I'm sorry," she said quickly. "I'm all right, really. It doesn't hurt, and I'm certain it will wear off soon. Are you sure you don't want to come in?"

"You have nothing to apologize for," Steve said harshly. "And thank you, but no, I seem to have lost my appetite." She was such a brave child, he thought.

Naminé nodded. "Some time, when you have more of an appetite ... dessert will be complimentary."

Charlie came in to pick up a salad for dinner, since she'd forgotten to grab something earlier, and smiled when she saw Naminé. "Hey! How goes it?" Then she saw the Specials board. "Um... or not?"

"It goes exceptionally badly," Naminé grimaced. She lifted her hands, fingers dangling limply. "Have you met our acting principal?"

Charlie's jaw dropped. "No, and oh my god, she got you too? What the heck did you do that she did that to you?" She gently reached out with one finger to touch Naminé's, then pulled back before she did. "Does it hurt?"

"Not particularly," she seethed, "but I've been waving around useless fingers for two days now. Can't dress myself, can't use utensils, can't draw."

That last one hurt.

Charlie sucked in an angry breath. "That-- no, bitch is too kind, I don't know what word I want, but it's gotta be worse than that! You must be going crazy! Maybe we can find someone to take it off you? There has to be *something*." It's possible the room temperature just went up a degree or two.

"I haven't the least idea," Naminé said, shaking her head. "Apparently this is my punishment for rule-breaking. You know, protesting that ridiculous decree against affectionate displays, and of course telling her that her policies are bigoted and small-minded."

She humphed, shaking her head. "My apologies, I'm horrid company today. It's just that when I feel like this, I itch for my crayons and having my sketchpad stare at me uselessly is only making everything worse."

"No apology necessary, I'd be in completely the same mood if she'd done it to me and I couldn't write or type or-- God." Charlie shook her head in sympathy again, angry on Naminé's behalf. "Right, now I really want to figure out something to do to annoy her. So far all I've done is write nasty little rhymes, but this is just... yeah." She bit her lip, then said, "Is there anything I can do? Bring you a Red Squishy? Get you splints?"

"No, it's quite all right. I'm ..." Naminé gave Charlie a curious look. "A red ... squishy?"

Charlie nodded enthusiastically. "Flavored ice slush-type drink, they sell them over at Turtle & Canary. I had a red one earlier, but they have Teal and Paper flavors today too." She grinned. "Which reminds me that someone put teal deer into our Temp Principal's office. I'm even more glad that they did after hearing about this."

Naminé laughed. "They did? That's wonderful. All I did to rebel was drink rather a lot and kiss a few girls. Rather enjoyable party. And I don't believe I've had any squishies yet. Are you certain you wouldn't mind?"

"Of course not! As many desserts as I've gotten here? It's my turn to get *you* something nice. Who knows, the ice might help your fingers or something." She grinned. "Turtle read the squirrel's notes, and she has no idea who did that, but she said half of the stuff in the office was stuck to the ceiling, too. I wish I dared stop by and see it."

Naminé curtsied. "Then thank you, I would appreciate it very much, and your next dessert is on me. I doubt anything's going to restore my fingers just yet, but it sounds delicious all the same." She looked at her fingers again, considering. "Although if it lasts much longer, I might bother someone about it. I'm going slightly crazy."

And then she laughed at the rest of Charlie's story. "That's incredible. I would hope that she got the message from that, but I imagine considering that woman she just increased the punishments and the insane restrictions. It's ludicrous."

"The School Board must have been desperate when they hired her," Charlie agreed. "Or no one else applied for the job! Okay, why don't I order a chef salad, go and get you your Squishy, and I'll be back in maybe ten minutes with it?"

"Or perhaps on paper, she seemed like a cheerful, efficient woman, and they missed that she's a sociopath," Naminé laughed. "That sounds perfect. And would you like some cheesecake with that, as well?"

"That would be awesome," Charlie said, smiling hugely. "Right. Time me!"

She zipped out to Turtle & Canary, persuaded Apu to get her a Teal Squishy from Alice, and was back in fourteen minutes. "Here you go, cold blue goodness."

"Ooooh. I thought I was getting red?" Naminé laughed, nodding to a bag sitting on the counter next to her. "I would hand you your items, except for the obvious difficulty. Also, I'm going to hope you have close to the exact change."

Charlie couldn't help but grin, and said, "No worries, if it isn't, we can just add the extra onto my next order. And see, straw! I went with Teal to honor the deer. No hands required to drink this!" She looked proud of herself, then frowned at Namine' in sympathy. "Okay, now that I think about it, most of your life has got to be massively inconvenient right now. Like having ten broken fingers. Grr."

"Oh, a straw! Thank you!" Naminé moved to clapped her hands appreciatively. There was a "thub" sort of noise, and she lifted an eyebrow. "I think the worst part is the stupidity, really. No, using the restroom is worst, but the stupidity is rather up there."

Charlie blinked, then face-palmed. "Can we give Umbridge the flu? A really bad case of stomach flu, somehow? Because that is just...."

"I'm going to enjoy it when she's removed from this town," Naminé glowered. "I hope that, perhaps, I can be standing nearby, gloating. Beaming. Waving rather cheerfully. You know, I would be drawing unflattering pictures of her and then adding arrows or setting bits on fire, but, again." She lifted her hands and rolled her eyes.

Charlie shook her head, jaw set. "Yeah. Right there with you. Oh, hey! Maybe you should talk to Hermione? Umbridge really has it in for her, and I think she's a witch too-- maybe she knows a way to reverse this?"

"Hermione?" Naminé considered. "I don't know that I've met her. It does sound like a rather good idea. Perhaps in a day or so if this doesn't wear off, when I reach the point of trying to kill people with my mind. Thank you, I shall remember that."

"Sure. I think I had her in one of my classes?" Charlie wasn't positive, but she thought she remembered seeing the other girl around somewhere. "But anyone Umbridge hates that much has to have some good points." Picking up her order, she said, "Enjoy the Squishy, and knock on my door if you need help with anything, okay?"

"I shall, and thank you very much. Perhaps ... I'm not sure. It seems as though there should be something we can do, doesn't there?" Naminé shook her head, and then smiled. "And if you should hear a rather persistent kicking at your door, that might be me."

"Right, because, fingers," Charlie said, chagrined. "419! And yeah, if I think of anything? I'll tell you as soon as I do. Have a good night, or as good as you can."

"I will, and you, too," Naminé said, nodding. "Good luck not incurring her wrath. I have a feeling we're going to need it."
