The beach, Friday afternoon
Charlie went swimming for a half hour before getting out of the water, and burning off enough power to make practice easier. She wished Isabel were going to be here, and hoped that her family stuff was going okay.
Meanwhile, she worked on her tan while waiting for Johnny.

She closed her eyes, and reached out to the ropes she had put in the pit, trying to ignite one without looking at it.

Johnny looked from her closed eyes to the rope in the pit.

He nodded. "Push it further up the rope, Charlie. And wait for that sign. Date, have fun, but if that sign isn't there, then," he shrugged, "gotta just keep looking. Or not. Not like you have to have a boyfriend right now, unless you just want one. Do you? Want one?"

Both ropes went up in flames simultaneously at two different points, fire racing up the strands as they blazed. Then they slowly rose in the air as they disintegrated, Charlie careful to keep them separate. "There!"

She started a fire on one end of the rope, and grinned at Johnny. "Try and stop it."

"All right." He reached out for the fire, attempting to infuse it into his own hand.

And it worked! "Woo!" She could still feel Johnny dousing it, tugging on it, but she had a line on part of the fire going straight up the rope to her. "Yes!"
