The Perk, Tuesday Evening

Sam was still nervous about going with Dean to tell their dad about what Umbridge was doing. But the latest morning announcements had proven that she was getting even crazier, and if Umbridge tried anything to keep Zoe from coming back...well, Sam didn't really want to think about that. Dean had the idea to ask their dad to come and meet them away from the house, so they could talk without Zoe overhearing. Now, it was just a matter of waiting for him to show up.

Dean eyed the coffee Sammy had gotten. "Don't know if you need any more caffeine, or you may vibrate yourself right into another dimension."

"I have a very high tolerance for caffeine," Sam replied. "It's going to take a lot more than this to make me noticeably vibrate."

"You mean like you are right now?" Dean asked pointedly.

Sam shot Dean a dirty look. "This isn't caffeine vibrating. This is nervous vibrating."

"Still vibrating," Dean said, taking a sip of his own coffee and doing his best to look calm and collected.

Sam grumbled at Dean and focused on his coffee cup. "Are you sure Dad got the message?"

Dean looked over Sammy's shoulder to see their father just entering. "Pretty sure, yeah."

John spotted his sons as soon as he entered the coffee shop. There had been something in the tone of Dean's voice though on the message he'd left that made John think he probably wanted to fortify himself before talking. Since he couldn't very well order a whiskey here, he settled for coffee before heading over to the table with it.

"Boys," he said in way of greeting as he sat down.

Sam sat up a little straighter, an unconscious act that came with being around his father. "Hey Dad. Thanks for coming."

"It sounded like it might be serious," John said, looking back and forth between the two boys and frowning when he noticed Sammy's bandage. "What happened to your hand?"

Sam put his uninjured hand over the bandage, almost trying to hide it. "It's...kind of a long story. Involving Umbridge. That's why we wanted to talk to you."

"Not that long," Dean said. "Umbridge is an out of control psychotic bitch and she's taking it out on the students. She turned me into a wolf for a week -- that's why I wasn't available to babysit last Friday, sorry -- and tortured Sammy here with this quill thing that carves whatever you write into your hand."

"It wasn't torture," Sam said quickly to Dean, before glancing back at his dad. "And we're not the only ones she's done this stuff to. She's gone after some of the other students too, in similar ways."

John's frown had gotten deeper as the boys talked. He had sensed something off about Umbridge when he met her, but had since let himself get distracted with Grace. And it seemed now as if that was a serious miscalculation on his part. "Start at the beginning and tell me everything."

"We don't know exactly what she's done to all of the other students," Sam said. "She's been putting weird hexes on some of them, like making things come out of their ears, or doing things to their voices. As for us...uh, we kind of started it," he admitted, focusing more on his coffee. "We broke into Umbridge's office and took her plates, the ones with the kittens on them. It was just supposed to be a prank. But she took it more seriously than that."

"Hell, we only did that because she was making noises like she was Zoe's permanent replacement," Dean said. "Besides those plates were just... wrong." He smiled slightly. "And we needed targets for skeet shooting."

Sam couldn't help smirking just a little. "The students seemed to enjoy that, at least. Anyway, she called Dean into her office, and did something to him to turn him into a wolf, and then a few days later, she called me in, and had me write with her possessed quill."

"Which was so far over the line it's not even in the rearview mirror," Dean stated. "Yeah, give us detention, we would've taken our punishment, but what she did?" He shook his head. "I was going to go rip her throat out when I found out about what she did to Sammy, but then I changed back. Not that I still didn't consider doing it..."

"I'd advise against that," John said calmly, though he was raging in his mind. How dare that bitch lay a hand on his boys! "Might give you rabies."

Sam shot Dean another look. "And I told you it's not worth attacking her over a few cuts," he said. "We were going to try to handle this by ourselves, but Umbridge seems really determined to keep her job, and we're afraid she might try to do something to Zoe to do that."

John's mouth curled up in a humourless smile. "She could try, but hell, Zoe would slap her down without any help from us." He took a deep breath. "But she shouldn't have to when she's got us to keep things from getting to that point."

"Exactly. We don't want anything to happen to her either, and she shouldn't have to deal with Umbridge at all if she doesn't have to," Sam said.

"So do we have a plan?" Dean asked, looking at his father.

"I think I best make my own recon before we go any further," John said.

"Do you want us to go with you?" Sam asked.

"No," John said quickly. "I think it best I handle this part myself."

Sam frowned softly, wondering if he should argue against that. "You're going to be careful, right?"

John smiled faintly. "I'm not going to do anything stupid." Well, he wasn't planning on it anyway...

"Good," Sam replied, smiling a little. "I'm sorry we didn't tell you sooner. We--I didn't want to worry you."
