Mary thought that today would be a good day to get caught up on all the paperwork that accumulated while she was a kitten. That was before she saw all the purchasing orders Gunther left for her. What the heck could he be doing with 50 lbs of Kobe beef from Japan? Maybe it would make more sense after she had a glass of wine. Or three.

"Nope, still not a kitty and not craving milk or catnip," said Mary. "Would you like a glass of wine?" she asked, indicating the half-empty bottle of merlot sitting nearby.

"I forgot how much I missed relaxing with a glass of red wine at the end of the day," said Mary, her hands shaky as she carefully poured an extra glass of wine. Of course, it was nowhere near the end of the day in Fandom.

It depended on a standard definition of day, really. For the night shift, this was overtime. For Mary, this was MillerMerlottime.

"It even helps the day get going sometimes," he said, giving her a look to make sure she's all right.

Mary was feeling just fine, that is, if she was still feeling anything at all.

"Nothing wrong with a drink with lunch, right?" said Mary, slurring her words just a little bit. "That's what I kept telling my friend Mike when he insisted that I had a drinking problem."

"Nope. It's just a problem when the drink is the lunch. But hey, everyone needs to get sloshed every now and then. I stopped, because at that time I was doing it every night and getting in barfights." He had some things to do, but nothing that was more important at the moment than making sure Mary was okay. "Any particular reason for the wine at lunch?"

Stan needed to talk to Mary. First, to organize the cookout. Second, to see if there was any awkwardness between them because how exactly does one rectify telling someone that you were interested in them and in someone else and wasn't sure how things would work out... while one of those people was, at the time, at kittywitty.

"Stan! I was wondering when you were going to show up," said Mary, a bit more animated than usual. Three glasses of wine would do that. "Would you like some wine?" she asked. The bottle appeared to be empty at this point, but there may have been a few drops left that she wasn't going to waste.

"Not today. I'm in a beer mood," he said, wondering if she was quite herself. "I was asking if you had plans for Wednesday or Thursday?"

"Not yet," said Mary. "I'm working the day shift both days, but I'm free in the evening." As long as she didn't end up drinking to the point of passing out on her lunch break.

"This would be more of an evening event," he said. "Can you think of anyone to invite? So far, I'm planning on Millie and some local business owners."

"Are we having a party? I love parties! There will be liquor, right?" asked Mary. Hey, she's got her priorities in order.

"Which business owners are you talking about? There's a new guy bartending at Caritas these days. I met him the other night. Oh, and you should invite Joanna Stayton. I've been meaning to have her over for dinner one of these days. And there's Barney Stinson, one of the teachers at the school. I wanted to see what happened if I introduced him to Joanna."

"I'm not sure, actually. I wanted a small gathering of people for a cookout, with myself as grillmaster, in my backyard. Just looking for a guest list, aside from Millie. And yourself," he said with a smile. Not talking about liquor. But making a note of it.

That reminded Mary that she had something to tell Stan. "Listen, about Millie? She's a really nice girl, and if you like her, I think you should go for it," said Mary. "I'm really flattered that you're interested in me and sometimes I don't know how I would have managed my first couple months in Fandom without you. The thing is, my heart is really set on someone else right now, and it wouldn't be fair to you."

"I might keep his name to myself for the time being, because I'm not entirely sure how serious he yet," said Mary with a smile. But thinking about a certain someone did make her feel a lot better than the wine did.

"Love is like poker," he said with a grin. "Sometimes you don't want to tip your hand too early," he said. He felt better, less weight on him now.
