The Arms Hotel Lobby, Wednesday

Mary had a pretty bad hangover, but she still managed to make it to her shift on time. She dimmed all the lights in the lobby, took a couple aspirin for her headache, and collapsed into her chair at the front desk while Gunther brought her a pitcher of water and a glass of ice. "Just keep it coming, I guess," said Mary. "Think you could do me a huge favor, Gunther? I have Stan's cookout tonight and the cookies I made yesterday didn't turn out so well."

Gunther made a face. "I heard," he said. "I listen to radio last night."

"Oh no," said Mary, covering her face. "You mean everyone knows about my wild tequila cookie experiment?" She was about to swear of tequila for the rest of her life when she noticed Gunther looking at her with pity. It wasn't like him. "What's wrong?" she asked.

"I listen to radio last night," Gunther repeated.

"Is there something that I should know about?" asked Mary. Gunther leaned over and whispered something in her ear that nearly made Mary's eyes pop out of their sockets. "No way! They really said that? Maybe it was a mistake. You know that sometimes the radio doesn't exactly get it right?" she suggested.

"I never liked him," said Gunther, looking angry. He directed the sous chef to put out the specials board while he continued to fuss over Mary.

Stan ambled in, a bit nervous about his cookout party, though it didn't show. Much. "Hey, Mary. How's your day?"

"Rough night?" he asked, quietly and slowly.

"It does have a nasty kick," he nodded. "How's your head?"

He gives her some probably unwanted advice about hangovers. It was brief. Mostly, don't do that much and drink more water. He finished it up with the point that it's always good to talk to someone.

"I'm here if you need to talk," he said.

"Ready for the party tonight? You're planning on coming, yes?" If she ddin't want to talk, he was here for the not-talking, as well. Except he was asking her to talk about the party, which was talking. But not not-talking.

"I am," he said. "I'm not sure how it will turn out. Are you going to be my wingma'am?" he asked with a wink.

"Anytime," he said. "Is there a day you have in mind? I'm not sure if I can arrange a double date on short notice." Short meaning within the next month.

He sighed a little. "I'm not really sure. I'm not sure who I'd set myself up with, for one. And I am not familiar with the town enough to try to assess and choose. Do you have anyone you're leaning towards?"

"Well, if you do find someone in mind, give me a call," he said. "I can always arrange for another cookout."
