River sat behind the desk, happily spinning around in the office chair while studying the ceiling. She wasn't talking to Gunther today. The menu was neatly written, however:

Just not about Gunther's food

Jeff padded in sometime in the middle of the day, staring longingly at the specials board. "He let you keep it," he said, simply, and not a little bit sadly.

"Oh, how convenient! I was going to call you, Jeff," said Mary with a smile. "Do you have your classes for next semester all set?"

Oh. The voice! Mary! Don't turn around, Jeff! "...I don't know," he said.

"All I needed to know is if you're still able to work Tuesdays once classes start. I'm trying to write next week's schedule," said Mary, waving her over-sized clipboard. "If you can't, let me know as soon as you can."

Considering that he was Jeff, all mental warnings flew with the wind and he turned around to catch Mary mid-clipboard-wave. Of course, it wasn't the clipboard he was staring at. "I'm sure it'll all work busom," he said.

Did she hear him correctly? Mary wasn't sure. "If you can't work Tuesday, just give me a call and I'll cover for you," said Mary. "And Jeff? I hope you want to continue working here at the hotel because we love having you here." She moved forward with the intention of hugging him.

Yes, she did, but Jeff wasn't about to elaborate on that fact. He would have, though, if it wasn't for the fact that said busom was suddenly very close and very much hugging him. His face broke into the universe's most reverent smile and he declared, with full conviction, "This is the best job ever ever."

"I'm so glad to hear that!" said Mary as she gave him a big hug.

"I can kill him if he doesn't," River said simply. Not that she would or that she had actually threatened to do so.

"Really?" Jeff asked, extraordinarily impressed (and maybe a little cowed), "That's handy. Do you kill people internationally, or is it just locally?"

"Don't kill people as a rule. Potential isn't the same as practise." She looked up at Jeff and smiled. "Have someone you want killed?"

He wobbled mildly backwards, like his back was inclining. "...Not at the moment, no," Jeff said, somewhat timidly and most definitely confused, "But I wouldn't want to limit my options."

"I could intervene with your mother on your behalf," River offered quietly. "But she might come back to haunt you." Half of the problem seemed to be that she was in his head after all.

"I'm fairly certain she's got most of my wardrobe boobytrapped in case of her death or disappearance," Jeff said, looking and sounding very much resigned.

River gave Jeff a sympathetic look. "She's got you trapped," River said, not referring to the boobytraps but the way his fear of his mother seemed to seep into everything.

Mary knew that the new semester was coming up soon, so she dropped by to see if River could still work Fridays or needed to change her schedule. She was completely unaware of any Gunther issues since he'd been fussing over her so much this week.

River stopped spinning the chair, sat up straight and smiled at Mary.

"Hi River! Do you have your classes set for next week?" asked Mary. She still hasn't realized that River can pick up her thoughts.

"I have. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays. Can still work on Fridays." She considered mentioning the Gunther issue, but decided against it for now.

"Good, because we really like having you here," said Mary, smiling. "And thank you for feeding me those prawns while I was a kitten. Everyone else just kept giving me catnip and those prawns were just wonderful."

River beamed. At least Mary appreciated her, even if Gunther didn't. "You were a very cute kitten," she said.

Mary laughed. "That's what everyone keeps telling me! It was so much fun. I was sad to change back," she said. Actually, the change had been pretty painful, but that was more because of the shock she received from Delinda's message.

"I've been doing a theme day on Thursdays and giving out free dessert to anyone who dresses up as a cowboy," said Mary. "Although Gunther tried to change it to anyone who wears a suit," she added with a frown. "Anyway, I was wondering if you have any other ideas for theme days that we could try out."

Wincing a little at Mary's memories, River tried to create a barrier to keep them out and protect herself. Then she smiled. "Gunther is stubborn. I believe we could have an animal theme." She thought for a moment. "Or a Chinese theme. We also need more dancing." There was too little dancing in Fandom, generally.

"We definitely need more dancing," agreed Mary. "I like the Chinese them also. I like your ideas."

River began to spin around on the chair again. "Love dancing," she said, laughing, happy that Mary seemed to appreciate her.

"Hey, River. Have you seen Mary around?" He was sad. And leave-y.

River looked up and pointed in Mary's direction. She smiled. "Need to say goodbye first."

"You're leaving? Man, seems like everyone's ducking out." Poor John. If only someone would give him a clue.

"I'm not. You are." She tilted her head. "I can read your mind."

"You're not? I am." Blink. No way. "No way." Telepathic? Naaaaw.

River just smiled sweetly. "Goodbye, John."

"Um. Okay." Good thing she's just teasing me, cuz otherwise she'd know I think she's hot. "It's good to see you. I'd have been nice to hang out more. Maybe in another life," he said with a smile.

It's a hotel, after all.
