Wonders of the World, Sunday

Joanna had gotten to Wonders early on Sunday. There was something she had wanted to try for a while now and simply hadn't had the opportunity. So before the gates were open, she grabbed a big silver key from the ticket booth and made a beeline to the go-kart track.

A passerby might have heard shrieks of delight and much laughter. It was, of course, the usual stern-faced Joanna that opened the gates for business just a few minutes later.

There was a large sign next to the ticket booth that read:

Wonders of the World
Miniature Golf and Go-Karts
Now Hiring Capable Employees
Unrivaled Benefits and Pay

Joanna was working the ticket booth.

Go-karts? Okay, it wasn't an overland 'shine relay, but it was the closest thing he thought he was going to get.

"'Scuse me, ma'am," Bo said with his biggest, most charming good ol' boy smile in place.

"How might I be of assistance?" Joanna asked, enunciating very clearly.

"Well I done seen that sign of yours out front and thought I'd see if you were still lookin' for that help."

Joanna looked the boy over. "You have an odd manner of speaking, but you don't look half bad," she stated. "And good looking employees help draw in customers. What qualifications do you possess?"

"Odd mannera speakin'?" he repeated, eyebrows drifting up. "Just like everybody else down home does. Well, I don't never had a proper job before but I'll bet I'll be damn good at customer service. And them little go-karts, I can build and fix 'em no problem if you've got trouble."

Joanna would never admit it, but she found the country twang charming. It reminded her of a particular business partner she was secretly quite fond of.

"Oh? I was hoping to find someone mechanically inclined. What day would you be looking to work? I have coverage on Sunday and Tuesday right now."

"Well I'm good with anything, ma'am," Bo said charmingly, grinning. "But I could swing a Thursday or a Friday?"

"Thursdays would work out quite well," she said reaching under the counter and pulling out a packet of paperwork which she pushed towards the boy.

"I'm Joanna Stayton, owner of the Wonders of the World corporation. And you are?"

[AFK for lunch! Will ping back ASAP!]

"Bo Duke," he replied. "Pleasure to meet you, ma'am."

He bent over to start on the paperwork, his handwriting messy and crabbed.

"Yes," she responded, "I'm sure it is."

Joanna leered at his handwriting for a moment before continuing. "There are, of course, many benefits to working for a Stayton. There will be an annual Christmas party on my yacht, seasonal bonuses, complementary games here for you and your friends, and, of course, access to me."

"Is that so?" he said politely to the last one, even if it was the bonuses and the free games that he really cared about. Maybe he'd finally be able to pay Cooter's garage bill.

"So, Mr. Duke, if you do good work for me, I will make sure you are properly taken care of while you're on this island." She slid over a pair of keys for the main gate and the office.

"I, of course, will be taking these back if your background check indicates some problem."

Bo rubbed the back of his neck. "'Course, ma'am," he replied, trying not to look nervous. After all, they'd never actually been charged with anything yet.

Keyword: yet.

"Thank you for the job, ma'am."

"I will stop by on Thursday to see how you're working out. Until then, Mr. Duke, don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns."

"You bet, Miz Stayton." Bo saluted a little. "Have a nice day now, y' hear."
