Stuff for Sale, Monday afternoon

The one thing that made it easier for Willow to wait until her classes started was this:

School supplies. Lots and lots of school supplies.

Willow woke up early, prepped herself not dirty, and then raced down to Stuff For Sale.

It was possible that the store trembled in fear. It would if it was wise.

And, yanno, sentient.

Anathema had most of her school supplies ready, but there was still a thing or two she was missing, so when she saw that Stuff for Sale was selling school supplies, she walked right in.

Willow waved hi. "Hey! Are you here to give notebooks and pencils a good and loving home?"

"As long as by good and loving you mean 'going to get used up withing a month' then yes, I am." Anathema said as she browsed through the store. "You?"

"Getting started on the whole school supply process," Willow said with a nod. "There's pre-notes that need writing, after all."

"What classes are you taking?" Anathema asked as she grabbed a couple notebooks.

"Debate with Mr. Noblet - he's very good," Willow said. "And Love Smart, with Mr. Stimpson. I'm not totally sure on the qualifications of that last one, but seeing as how I'm in what I hope to be a very long-term relationship, I felt that there was no harm in studying up on the topic. You?"

"US History and US Government, I feel I should know about the country where I am. I'm also in the Good Omens Prophecy class and modern feminism. I believe Mr. Noblet is teaching one of the US classes."

"Oo! I took Mr. Noblet's history class," Willow said. "It's excellent. Very informative."

"Any books you can recommend for me to read with the class? Since you already took it." Anathema saw nothing weird with doing extra reading for a class.

"I have some textbooks you can borrow," Willow said, since she saw nothing wrong with that either. "You just have to promise not to mark up the pages or fold them down or break the binder or drink or eat anywhere near them."

Anathema looked horrified at the thought. "Why would I ever torture a book like that?"

"Some do!" Willow said, looking horrified. "It's awful!"

"But then others can't read the book and the book is disgusting for you to read!" Anathema pointed out.

"And the book is all damaged and the other books make fun of it!" Willow added.

"You've met talking books?" Anathema asked, honestly curious.

"Admittedly sometimes this is implied," Willow said.

"Books can't have emotions." Anathema argued. "People can have emotions about books."

"Books can so have emotions," Willow said. "Their emotions are book-like."

"Have you ever communicated with a book?"

"Doesn't everyone?"

"That would depend on your definition of communication. Because while a book does give you information and you sometimes give the book feedback, is it really capable of understanding what was said?"

"I feel this is not for me to judge," Willow said. "Maybe the book understands in ways that I as a human would not be able to tell."

Billy was nostalgically looking at the Trapper Keepers. Ah, eras past.

It felt strange and melancholy to go shopping for pens and other school supplies. Not because it was actually strange - being the beginning of the semester it wasn't - but because it brought back memories of the year before when she and Blair had found they had pens in common. There had also been a pen song. She would not be singing that now.

Although her income had increased since she started working at the hotel, River made a very frugal investment this year. She didn't expect to do much drawing, after all.

Willow waved. "Hey River."

River smiled a little. "Hello. New semester, new pens."

Willow nodded with excitement. "New notebooks! New bookbags! New highlighters!"

Willow's enthusiasm seeped into River's mind. "Highlighters," she repeated dreamily. "Colours give focus and creates a new pattern."

"And they make it so much easier to organize your notes," Willow said. "I have no idea how some people do without them."

River didn't take much notes, as she tended to pick things up anyway. "Extrapolate from the material taught," she said. "Finding new connections in colour."

"And then make reports with graphs!" Willow may have done a little bounce there.

The bouncing made River think of Blair and her smile disappeared for a second. "Reporting on the state of the world. Graphic knowledge," she said, nodding solemnly.

"Extra credit!" Willow added. "Not that that's ever a guarantee but there is no harm in making the effort."

"If the effort is right," River added. "Highlighters are beneficial."

[Bedtime for me! River-speak is hard when you're sleepy ;) ]

"I've oft found this to be true," Willow said. She found a package of multi-colored highlighters and snuggled it.

She did not think that doing so was strange.
