The Arms Hotel Lobby, Saturday

The usual assortment of scones, pastries and tea sandwiches were out on the buffet, along with the tea, of course. This week, Mary added coffee to the list of available beverages.

She settled into a cozy chair with a cup of flavored black tea and some cucumber sandwiches to wait and see who came by today.

Stanley ventured in for a nice cup of tea and some conversation.

"Hey you," said Mary in greeting. "What brings you to my little corner of the lobby?"

"Oh, the usual," he said with a smile. "Tea and conversation. HOw's your week?"

"It's been pretty crazy, but thankfully it's over now," said Mary. "How about you?"

"Fairly uneventful. I've debating having a cookout again, just to spice things up."

"You too, huh? I was toying with the idea of having a cocktail party, just because I feel like planning something," said Mary.

"Excellent. Brilliant minds do think alike," he said. "Would probably be best here, as it's a slightly better decor," he said with a dry smile.

"Thanks," said Mary. "Now I just need to know who to invite and when to have the party."

"I can provide some assistance with that," he volunteered. "I know a gal who's great at planning parties. Runs the hotel in town, does a really good job organizing."

"Really? She must be a useful person to have around," said Mary, her eyes sparkling. "Anyone I know?"

"You might, small town like this. She has ~~huge tracts of land~~ a pretty good personality and interesting ways of running a business. Can you believe," he said, leaning towards her, "that she wants to install steam showers at the hotel?"

"In all seriousness, when should I have the party?" asked Mary, amused.

"Well, you'll have to schedule it around the events on the island. Homecoming is soon, I hear, so maybe on one of the weeks leading up?" he suggested.

"I'll have to look into that," said Mary, grabbing her clipboard and jotting down a few notes. "So, have you talked to Millie lately?"

"No, I haven't," he admitted. "I haven't been goign to the Wednesday movies, either. Been a bit of a homebody the past few weeks." He looked down at his tea. "Have you talked to her?"

"Not lately," said Mary. "Things were kind of crazy around here. Most of the cleaning staff took some time off and I got to pitch in and clean rooms this week. I haven't left the hotel that much all week."

"They on strike? Out sick? That doesn't sound good. Fandom thing?"

"More like too much party kind of a thing, according to the rumors," said Mary. "Thankfully it didn't last long and they were all back to work on Friday, but I'm pretty exhausted. Those maids do a lot of work. Making beds, vacuuming, scrubbing toilets, washing sheets... I was ready for a cold beer afterwards."

"Ah, hangover flu," he said with a nod. "One of those 24 hour bugs that goes away with water and aspirin," he said with a knowing smile.

"Have you tried asking Millie out?" asked Mary. Her own love life was non-existent at the moment, so she was happy to meddle.

"I...no, I haven't," he said simply. Meddle away?

"How else is she supposed to know that you're interested in her?" asked Mary, amused.

"Telepathy?" he said, sheepishly.

"We need a plan," said Mary, grabbing a blank sheet of paper and placing it on top of the stack on her clipboard. "Okay, how about after I sent out the invites for the cocktail party, you drop by the bookstore and ask if she she'll be attending? And then if her answer is yes, suggest that the two of you could go together."

"That does sound best," he said. "What's the paper for?" His eyebrow quirked.

"I need to make an outline of our plan," said Mary, jotting something down. "Now, the cookout was a fantastic idea. The only problem was that she asked me if I ever considered dating you. Obviously, we'll need to keep me out of the picture. Easiest thing is for me to have a date of my own for the cocktail party."

"Have someone in mind?" he asked. "THe one of whom you spoke?"

"Umm, there's a bit of a complication there, as in he's seeing someone else," said Mary, frowning. "But I should have no trouble finding myself a date."

"That's good to hear," he said with a smile and a delayed post because this was kicked in the junk mail bin *kicks yahoo*.

Yay! No having to worry about work today.
