Mauvaise Chance Apartments Office/Lobby

Doors are open, Guy With Tools signs are up, and Xander's got his laptop open on the counter, but he is absolutely not downloading the latest issue of Ninth Wonders. Because that would be wrong.

And also wouldn't take very long; he's long past that and onto the full-season-3 torrent Mister What Classified.

Since she didn't have class today and had had the worst day in the history of ever yesterday, Dawn headed for comfort once she ~~snuck like a sneaking thing before Sam woke up~~ left her room. Which, for her, was a large cup of hot chocolate from the Perk and Xander.

"Hi."

"Hey!" Xander looked up mid-wave, and added, "Should I ask how your weekend went, or is this one of those There Was No Weekend weekends?"

"This was so one of those second kind," Dawn told him with a sigh, really not wanting to talk about it, but wanting to talk about it. "And then it got worse, in an us kind of way."

"Bridge and I just thought we were each other," Xander started; then he frowned. "Us kind of way like bitey pointy slimy scaly and/or endy of worldy?"

"Exactly like that," she sipped at her hot cocoa, then set it aside. It just wasn't doing the job, and she wrapped her arms around herself as she leaned against the counter. "Two things. About this weekend. Did it seem at all kind of familiar to you?" Maybe she was just gun shy about this particular spell and looking for someone to blame.

"Second, Mel and I were attacked by a vamp last night. New one."

"Here? You two didn't take off for the mainland or anything?" The second thing grabbed his attention first, and it took him a moment to remember the first. "And no, don't think so - never lost my memory before except that weekend when I really wasn't me."

"No, it was here." Another sigh, and maybe she was going nuts about the Willow thing. "You didn't have a thing where a certain someone made you lose your memory for a day or two, along with everyone else, because they were playing with magic they shouldn't have been? Like, after Buffy came back?"

Mel came in holding two cups of coffee and looking less like her perky self.

"Morning," she putting one cup down on the counter. "You missed an eventful patrol last night."

"After? No, not in our version. But there was memory stuff right before; just not with everybody. She was trying to bring Buffy back by herself, and Tara figured it out, I guess, and argued with her about it." Xander shook his head, stifling a groan that he didn't, after all, know had been earned, yet. "Just because she has messed with that stuff doesn't mean she did this time, though."

Which didn't mean he wasn't going to worry about it - but vampires on the island seemed more pressing right this second than something that might just be a Random Act of Fandom. "You said new vamp, like not just new to the island but still in the 'ooh, these fangs are shiny' stage?"

"As in 'hand desperately in need of a manicure coming up through the potting soil'," she nodded, and decided to leave the Willow stuff be for right now. Maybe it was a random act, and maybe it wasn't. It couldn't hurt to ask, right?

"You don't just plant those like tulips and wait for 'em to come up next year - that means there has to be at least one loose on the island making more."

"I heard; Dawn was here," Xander answered. "The Watcher's Code says I'm supposed to say Yay Vampires only longer and with a British accent, but my larynx keeps trying to climb up my throat and kick me in the head whenever I do."

"See, I was hoping you'd say that it didn't mean that and that I didn't have to worry about it, even though I knew it did," she pouted, "that maybe the one Mel killed was just...I don't know, like he got lost in an underground tunnel or something."

Underneath everything was fear. She didn't want a master vampire here.

"Well, it's Fandom; anything's possible. There's a tunnel in the pool; maybe he wanted to go swimming and missed. By a lot." No, he didn't sound like he believed himself.

"That's one weird code," Mel said with a trace of a smile. "So what does your larynx think we should do now? Dawn thinks there's a big bad vampire someplace out there."

"This was more fun when it was Giles and wasn't our slayer, you know." It hadn't been, because Buffy was their slayer in so many ways, but the responsibility had finally become real for her. "Anyway. I'm gonna tell Sam as soon as I can face him again, but thought you'd wanna know, since you're senior guy."

"My larynx thinks we up patrols, for one thing - and probably stick to people who know what they're doing in a fight. You now have my permission to beat up the fake-vampire and stuff him in a locker if he tries to come along."

"SWEET!" Mel exclaimed now looking very happy. "That is one smart larynx!"

And in the back of her mind Mel is wondering how Jim would like the inside of Locker 327.

"I think I know some of the major slayer type people who are still around and I'll see if they are interested in patrol."

"I choose to take that as a professional term and not a hint that I might need to hobble over on my walker when I let Giles know." Xander winked. "Want to talk about the Sam thing, or pretend there is no Sam thing? I'm open to either option."

"It can tapdance too, but I had to put a stop to that. Kept me awake at night."

"Does it do any other tricks?

Aaaaaand there are some answers for which Xander's larynx is thankfully smart enough to attempt to choke him in order to prevent them making it all the way out of his mouth.

"It... makes sounds?" Coughing ones.

Mel laughed pretty hard at that. "Well the tap dancing one is hard to top."

"Though the sound-making means I'll never make it as a mime, so I'm all for that." Xander rubbed the back of his neck. "You get anything out of your vamp about who put him there or how many more there might be?"

"Um. No," Mel said looking sheepish. "He popped up and I did the stabbity-stabbity bit."
