The Arms Hotel Lobby, Tuesday

It was slightly more difficult than usual to get a hold of Jeff today, as he was flitting around the hotel with a roll of scotch tape and some wooden boards.

"What are you doing?" Gunther asked, cornering him in the kitchen.

"Mary's got me on for the weekend but I've got to protect myself, you don't know what it's like!" Jeff whimpered.

"...What?"

"Do not go near my mother," Jeff warned him, pointing in his face, "No good will come of it." And then he ducked under Gunther's arm in a hurry.

Gunther blinked.

"Hi Jeff!" said Mary, in her usual bouncy fashion. "Are you looking forward to this weekend?"

Jeff froze up halfway into the hallway, holding a long piece of extended scotch tape between his fingers. "...No," he squeaked.

"Aww, that's too bad. Do you have anyone coming for Parents Weekend?" asked Mary.

Jeff didn't turn around. Or let go of the tape. "My mother," he whimpered.

It hadn't entirely escaped Mary's notice that Jeff had issues with his mother. "Well, it's just for a few days and then she's gone, right?"

"That's enough time for her to remove my boys," Jeff whimpered right on, his hands shaking.

Mary opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out. How the heck do you respond to that?

It might be slightly harder than usual, though.
