Luke's Diner, November 1 (Thursday)

Yitzhak was dressed up like Stevie Nicks today -- no particular reason, really. Okay, so maybe he'd been having dreams about Hedwig again and was in one of those moods where listening to Rumours on endless loop (look, at least it wasn't "I Will Always Love You" as sung by the neighbor in the next trailer over, Hedwig) seemed to be the thing to do.

Maybe it was the fact that the endless feud with the dishwasher had manifested itself in the form of ongoing scathing Looks of Hatred worthy of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. And that wasn't even an act.

There was a tambourine beside the Help Wanted sign, still crowned with the glittery pompadour wig.

Ronan came into the diner, chuckling softly at something Johnny had just said. "Where d'you want to sit?" he asked, in lieu of a proper response.

"Anywhere is fine," he answered but directed them towards an out of the way table where they might be able to talk with less noise. "So how was your Halloween, Ronan?" he asked after they were seated.

"I had to ~~handwavily~~ run off island," Ronan said. "There was some stuff to take care of back home that I couldn't leave." He frowned slightly, but didn't say any more on the subject, at least for now. "How about yours?"

"It was great despite having to work. I wore a nifty little costume that had most everyone who came in ogling me." Which was a mild understatement but hey, Johnny just saw it like it was.

"I hope all is all right with you," he said and paused as a waiter came over to take their orders.

Ronan ordered a salad and a Coke, then waited for Johnny to place his order and the waiter to leave before continuing. "As... well as can be expected," Ronan said. "It's still an adjustment being back, and the trip home last night didn't help all that much."

Johnny ordered a cheeseburger and fries and arched his brow at Ronan's order. "Dude, are we watching our figure?" he teased. Then he grew more serious. "You want to talk about it?"

"No," Ronan replied, chuckling. "That would be if I ordered a diet Coke. I'm just in the mood for salad today, I guess."

He wasn't ignoring the second question. At all. Why do you ask?

Johnny nodded and slouched some in his seat, resting his arm along the back of the booth. "So?" He knew Ronan was avoiding his question.

There was a moment's hesitation there; a long moment, in fact, before Ronan replied. "I don't know if 'want to' is the right way to put it," he finally said, "but I probably should, so..." He smiled softly, a bit sadly. "I said that I spent a year sideways, right? On a different Earth?"

He was quiet as Ronan hesitated because Johnny wasn't about to push him into talking, that's not what he was here for. But when Ronan did begin to open up, he felt oddly relieved. "Yeah, I remember you telling me that."

"I spent the entire year trying to get home," Ronan continued, "but it almost seemed like there was no hope. I... about a month and a half ago, now, I'd finally decided to stop searching and settle down there." Another soft smile. "I'd met someone. It... helped the decision."

He cocked his head. "You're decision on staying... or trying to get home?"

"Staying, I mean; I'd met someone there." There was a cheeky tone to Ronan's voice as he continued. "Her name was Michaela, usually; she'd go by Michael if she ever needed to be a boy. She was a shapeshifter, after all."

Johnny was surprised and the emotion flared briefly in his eyes before he glanced down at the table then back over to Ronan. "What happened?"

Ronan bit his lip. "We got a report," he said, "from a reliable source. One that said there was a way I might be able to get home after all -- a sword, blessed by a winged god. Michaela thought I should go for it, and I couldn't say no, not when it was a chance this good. I've... had dealings with the Power that this god probably was." He stopped a moment, then said, "Let me try to rephrase that to be less confusing. I've worked with a Power before, and it was probably him who was the winged god in question. A pretty good chance, anyway."

This all sort of confused Johnny but he did his best to understand while remaining attentive. He wasn't used to magic or wizardry, powers yes... at least where he was from. "And this Michaela wanted you to come back here?"

"Not exactly, but... she knew I was settling for her world. For her. That it wasn't what I really wanted. So she convinced me to go after the sword, even though she really wanted me to stay with her."

"Then she must have been a pretty special girl," Johnny considered thoughtfully. "How do you feel now, Ronan, having left her?"

There was a long stretch of silence here, during which the waiter brought their food. Finally, after he'd left, Ronan took a long drink of his Coke before saying, "She died."

Johnny took a couple bites of his cheeseburger and washed it down with a swallow of Coke, letting the silence linger while Ronan seemed to consider what he wanted to say. When he said what he said, Johnny was stunned. He certainly wasn't expecting to hear that. "Jesus, Ronan... I'm so sorry."

"It was in the temple," Ronan said. "There were... hostile forces. They were coming after us, because Michaela and I, and our friend Ciaran, had done a lot to help the locals learn to defend themselves, and set up a lot of stuff for them, so we were convenient targets, you know? Michaela took a shot for me, just as I was reaching for the sword." Ronan looked away. "I... She saved my life so that I could get back."

He didn't know what to say. He sat there, taking it in, a little dumbfounded and a lot hurt for Ronan. Finally he reached across the table, palm up... "She loved you."

"Yes," Ronan said. His hand came up, as if he were going to reach for Johnny's, but he stopped. "Yes, she did. More than I loved her." Hurriedly, he got up, moving away. "I'm sorry, I need to... I need to go." He started to walk away from the table, almost a run.

Johnny was way confused now by Ronan's actions and he got up and followed after him. "Hey, wait!"

Ronan looked over his shoulder, just for a moment, almost stopping -- but then he was off and out the door of the diner.

Tell him lies, tell him sweet little lies . . .

Yes, this was totally an excuse to just recycle the "Mango in the Night" pun. Because it makes me giggle.

Some days you just need that laugh.
