The Perk: Afternoon

After classes, Ron had ventured out of the dorms and did some exploring in town before finally deciding to check out this "Perk" thing he had heard so much about. Getting confused looks upon his requests for a "Butterbeer" and "Pumpkin Juice" he somehow ended up with double tall soy latte that the barista swore by.

Ron was of the opinion that this was probably what mud tasted like.

River wandered into the Perk for a coffee and an apple cake, and tilted her head as she noticed Ron. "Doesn't taste like mud. I've tried it."

Ron looked over at River and gave her a sharp look.

"It's not nice to eavesdrop on people's thought," he grumped.

Of course he's used the extendable ears that his brothers made but that was completely different.

River shrugged, smiling. "It's not nice to eavesdrop using magical items," she replied. "I like coffee."

Ron frowned. "That was a completely different situation," he argued. "And stop doing that!"

He then frowned at his soy latte. "I don't see how anyone can drink this gunk."

She sat down opposite Ron. "The apple cake is even better," she said, taking a big bite from it. As to stop reading his mind, what would be the fun of that?

Ron took another sip of his soy latte and shook his head. "Perhaps but this is rubbish."

He then returned to counter to ask for some tea to drink and an apple cake.

And then after a conversation with the Barista he returned with a gingerbread latte and a cheese danish. It's best not how to ask how that happened.

"Perhaps you should hold on more firmly to your ideas," River said, sipping her coffee. "But experimentation is a good way of learning."

Ron shrugged. "Sometimes it's just easier this way."

"At least you can make the pastry fly," she pointed out, taking another bite of her apple cake. "I can't."

"Any wizard can do that," Ron said with a shrug.

River imitated the shrug, then chuckled. Being a wizard wasn't quite the norm here, but Ron was certainly aware of that. She dipped her nose in the frothy milk of her latte.

Ron just raised an eyebrow at that. "Why did you do that for?"

"The consistency is interesting," River replied, trying to lick the milk off her nose and failing.

"And you needed your nose to figure that out?" Ron said with a raised eyebrow.

"The nose is sensitive," River replied. "And it amuses me."

"Well as long as you're amused," Ron said with a shrug.

"Not as easy to amuse you," River replied, this time trying to stir her coffee with her nose.

Ron was mostly baffled. "You have heard of a spoon, right?"

River raised her head, grinning. "Yes."

The bafflement did not go away. "Riiiiight. Okay, then."

Ron was certainly easily baffled. "Does your sister enjoy making fun of you too?"

"You met my sister?" Ron asked looking confused.

"No." River took another bite of her apple cake.

Ron scowled. "Look, I know you think it's cute but not everyone appreciates people poking into their head."

"Can't help it." That wasn't completely true anymore, but there was no need for Ron to know that. "So does she?"

"Well then stop showing off," Ron snapped. "You know I don't like it."

Of course she knew, but his reaction invited the teasing. He did it in a different way than Simon, which was probably because he was used to a different meimei. "Why don't you want to talk about your sister?"

"I talk about her!" Ron protested. "And stop that!"

"I can listen to you talk." River smiled, tilting her head.

Sokka noticed Ron through the window and ducked into the Perk. "Hey! Bananaman! Long time no club!"

Noting the look on Ron's face, he added, "You didn't get coffee, did you? A word of advice: always go for tea."

"I'm just afraid they'll give me something more undrinkable," Ron replied glumly. "They've given me something called a gingerbread latte now. The only thing is there's no gingerbread in it whatsoever."

"The problem," Sokka pointed out, "is that 'latte' is still coffee." Not that he knew what "gingerbread" was. "I'm serious; go for the tea. It's pretty hard to mess up burnt leaf juice."

Just to prove his point, he ordered the weirdest-sounding tea off the menu. He took a sip and shrugged. "Okay, you can kind of mess it up by adding berries," he admitted. "But it's still pretty good."

"All right but it's not going to work," Ron said as he went back to the counter and returned with something that looked like tea but had cream in it. "It isn't tea but it's pretty close. I guess."

Sokka held up an admonishing finger. "Ah-ah-ah," he cautioned. "It IS tea, it's just a weird KIND of tea."

"Tea is just tea," Ron argued. "Weird tea doesn't count."

"JUST tea???" Sokka countered. "You don't add any honey or ANYTHING?"

"I'm not talking about the normal stuff you put in tea," Ron said rolling his eyes. "I'm talking about the weird teas that have been mixed with other stuff. Like a mango."

Sokka shrugged. "I kinda like mango. Berries, not so much."

"But it's mango," Ron grumbled. "You shouldn't put that in tea. Or berries for that matter. Lemon is accepatable and maybe an orange rind but it's supposed to be tea. Not mango tea or berry tea. Just tea."
