The Perk, after classes

Charlie had abandoned her math homework in favor of her newspaper interview ~~still to be played out.~~ At the moment, she was starting to veer toward her stories over the interviews, too.

Rodney got himself a nice big cup of coffee before joining Charlie. "Hi," he smiled as he got to her table and set down all his stuff. He leaned in to give her a peck on the cheek before taking a seat.

"Hi!" Chralie grinned and returned the kiss briefly, before perching her head on her hand. "What's up with you and the robot babies? I heard weird things on the Radio."

"Oh, that," Rodney looked embarrassed. "I kind of left John alone with them for two days and they drove him crazy. I think Professor Skywalker purposefully programmed them to hate him so I figured if I could reset their base code, I could fix the programming so that they wouldn't cry every time John got near them. It really sucks when your co-parent can't even get near your kids," he said sadly. "Unfortunately, Skywalker booby-trapped them and I wasn't able to fix anything."

"Oh, wow," Charlie said, impressed and amused. "He must be really good at programming. And what, did he just want you to take care of them, or did he want to make poor John miserable?"

"Yeah," Rodney sighed wistfully. He would've loved a chance to study that technology without the fear that it would blow up in his face. "I think he wanted John to be miserable. I mean, as far as I know, I've never been on his bad side so there's no reason he'd want me to be stuck with them."

Charlie shook her head mock-sadly, and said, "Good thing, too, it sounds like. How are your other classes going?"

"Oh, you know, same old thing. Mr. Deadpool's still crazy and I haven't really gotten a handle on the new Communications guy," he shrugged. "How's your, um, classes and whatnot?" Rodney had been so caught up with the droid babies lately that he really had no clue what Charlie had been up to.

"Newspaper is good," Charlie said, tapping the notebook with her notes on Joanna Stayton. "Another fun interview this week. Debate is... interesting," she allowed. "I think I'm doing okay in there, even though I don't win the debates very often. But math." She glared at her math book, and muttered, "I picked out this week's pre-calc. That's something, right?"

"That's good," he nodded. "I've found that confidence and sheer stubbornness go a long way towards winning a debate," not that this had worked for him very much. Rodney totally missed the glare regarding calculus. "It really is! I'm so glad we've finally gotten to something interesting," he added happily.

"Interesting?" Charlie shook her head and buried her face in her hands. "Rodney, I like science. I like hearing about it. But this, this is... this is worse than word problems. Which I barely got through."

"Oh," Rodney kind of deflated. He liked being able to share the things he enjoyed. "I suppose this is pretty far beyond your level. Maybe you should concentrate on reviewing the easy stuff for the final so you'll at least get some credit for it." He stated all of this very matter-of-factly.

Charlie stared at him open-mouthed a moment, disbelieving, then folded her arms and glared. She didn't like math, but she thought she was doing pretty well, considering how far above her head most of this moath was. "Right. Because it's hopeless that I'll ever catch up to you, right?"

"Well, I am a genius," Rodney said as if this were the most obvious thing in the world. "There aren't many people around here on my level. Though that one chick with the bushy hair seemed pretty smart. And maybe the redhead," he added ponderously.

Usually Rodney's ego is either funny or endearing, but this isn't either. "Really." And now Charlie's glaring hard enough that he has to get the message, right? "Do either of these girls have names? Or just hair colors?"

Okay, Rodney was started to get that something was off here, but he really didn't know what he'd done wrong. He also didn't know what the right answer would be. Was it the fact that he'd mentioned a couple other girls that was bad or that he'd done it by hair color? He'd paid enough attention in Feminism to know that he might have been slightly disrespectful. "Um, I think it was Hermia? And maybe Wendy?" He really didn't have a clue.

Charlie's not sure if she's mad because she's not on the list of Smart Girls, because Rodney still hasn't caught on that he's been insulting, mad that he noticed them by hair color (how did he describe her? That blonde girl I kiss sometimes?) or because she didn't even know the names of the girls she was jealous of. "Uh-hunh." She flipped open her Math book, and glared at the pre-calc for a minute, before bursting out with, "I'll bet they have boyfriends who don't know math, either."

And now, Rodney was really lost. "Because opposites attract?" He asked tentatively.

"Yes! Exactly!" Or something. Charlie didn't just feel stupid right now, she felt ridiculous and grumpy too. She closed her eyes and sighed. "Okay, I think I'm just in a weird mood. So. Yeah." She bit her lip, and forced out, because she really did need it: "Could you help me with the assignment? Please?"

Rodney looked puzzled. There weren't many things in his reality that he really didn't understand, but girls were at the top of that list. "Uh, sure," he nodded at the change in subject and focused on the math problem before launching into one of his typical lecturey explanations.

For once, Charlie didn't find this charming either, and had to refrain from pounding her head on the table.

Sigh.
