The Arms Hotel Lobby, Wednesday [12/12]

When Hoshi arrived for her shift, she found half the lobby blocked off with Gunther working on something big. She tried asking him in German what his project was, but she didn't understand his answer in English or German. She had no idea what gingerbread palms had to do with the holidays. So she left Gunther alone and spent her day studying for final exams.

Jack came in to see what the food of the day was.

Aw, no, not that tofu stuff.

Hoshi didn't even look up from her books, though she heard someone come in. "Gunther, you've got a customer!" she shouted. Gunther didn't bother to move from his gingerbread creation.

"Uh, hi," he said. To Hoshi. Because she was at least easier to talk to.

Hoshi finally looked up from her books. "Oh, hi Jack," she said. "Are you ready for finals?"

"Not really," he admitted. "I've been going over my notes, though."

They were mostly doodles.

"You? Ready for finals?" At least she was making an effort.

"Not yet, but I have 4 days, 5 hours and 23 minutes until my first final, so I still have time to prepare," said Hoshi. "I drew up a study schedule so I can stay on track." It also served to keep her away from Bejeweled and video poker.

"...you have it down to the minute?" he stared. "That's just crazy!"

And really really well-prepared.

"Not crazy, just organized," said Hoshi.

"I'll say," he said, blinking and boggling. "Wow. Um. Do you do anything else? Eat? Sleep?"

He was mostly joking. Really.

"I like to cook and I work-out in the gym occasionally," said Hoshi.

"You're a good cook," he nodded. "And you're in pretty good shape," he pointed out with a grin. "Like me!"

He flexed, showing off his guns in an endearing manner. Really.

Hoshi wasn't that impressed, and it probably showed in her expression as she said, "Oh, that's nice," without really meaning it.

Jack didn't notice. "These take hard work," he said, making more ~~obnoxious~~ manly poses. He stopped and smiled at her. "So you're really good at this school thing, then, right?"

"I can't help you cheat on the final," Hoshi said automatically.

He blinked. "No."

He shook his head. "No, that wasn't what I was asking. Just...some pointers on how to study better. My, uh, notes aren't, um, the best." And may have been covered in doodles and possibly drool marks from sleeping in class. "For future classes, even."

"My number one tip? No distractions," said Hoshi. It was a discipline forged in years of solitary home study.

"Oh. So I guess I should stop playing solitare, right?" He looked chagrined. "I found some poker thing on one of those computer things, and spent a few days on that."

"What's solitaire?" asked Hoshi. Computers in the future didn't have all the games.

"Card game you play by yourself? Just you and a deck of cards." Didn't they have games in the future?

"It doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun," said Hoshi.

"It's better than counting cracks in the ceiling or spots on the wall," he said with a sign. "Spend too much time alone, you get stir crazy." Shrug.

That afternoon, Robin, wearing a blue parka, and a tiny santa hat, was making his rounds of the town, searching for people. He had a back pack on his skateboard.

"Hi Hoshi!"

"Hi Robin," said Hoshi, smiling.

"Happy whatever holiday they might have in Future Japan anywhere close to this time of year."

"Thanks," said Hoshi. "I guess the holiday would be Christmas, but in the future I come from, they really don't make a big deal about Earth's religious holidays. This is kind of fun to see what I'm missing."

"I'm not sure it's that religious these days actually." Robin shrugged. "But anyway, I have a present for you." He handed her a gift wrapped copy of Grim's Fairy Tales, translated into Frog.

"Thank you," said Hoshi, looking at the book in amazement. "I think I'm going a lot of fun reading this while I'm at home over the semester break."

"And don't forget, if you want any further lessons, I'm always around."

"You can count on it," said Hoshi. "Are you going home over the break? I'm still trying to work this out, but I'm not going home the whole time, just long enough to reassure my parents that I'm still alive."

"Yeah I'm leaving on the 19th, and coming back a few days after Christmas."

Even if Gunther is occupied, there's still some hotel staff who can heat up the cold tofu.

I'm around on and off until 6 PM, but be aware that I only slept for three hours last night.
