So the network card in his computer didn't want to work any more. (And well, considering it had been a bargain of the off-the-back-of-a-truck variety, and literally at that, it wasn't exactly a surprise.) Yitzhak was . . . not as cranky about this as one might expect.

Or he could have been. Hard to tell, really, since he suspected he was coming down with a really bad cold, and he did not need to have a swollen, puffy, red nose a week before working a Christmas Eve drag show.

"Hi," Jamie said grabbing a stool at the counter. "Can I have a burger please? Well done."

Yitzhak nodded (not all that sullenly, really) and held up a slightly melty piece of cheese in one hand while quirking an eyebrow curiously at Jamie. Meanwhile, with the other hand, he slid a glass of water and a packet of tropical fruit flavor Emergen-C across the counter.

"What's that?" Jamie said pointing at the packet.

Yitzhak started to go into a complex series of hand gestures about ripping open the packet and stirring it into the water, but paused halfway through the act of shaking the imaginary powder down and pointed at the specials board instead.

Jamie looked at the board and then back at Yitzhak.

"I NEVER LEARNED TO READ!"

And then with a dramatic flop Jamie face-planted himself on the counter and began to sob hysterically.

Oh, for the love of the MAC makeup counter . . . Yitzhak sighed, tried to toss the Emergen-C packet at Jamie's head, and headed into the kitchen to bully terrorize make the cook start on the burger.

When he came back out front, he not-so-subtly nudged a napkin dispenser over toward Jamie and stood there with both hands planted on the counter and an 'are you done yet?' expression on his face.

Jamie dried his eyes. "I'm sorry. Sometimes it just gets to me sometime. You know what I mean?"

Oh yes, Yitzhak knew from things getting to him. As for example the drama queen sobbing on his counter. Maybe he'd better make sure that burger was extra well done, just in case Jamie burst into tears over an unfortunate slightly-pink spot or something.

The slightly bored expression still firmly glued to his face, he nodded and gestured at the glass of water, miming pouring the packet into it.

Yitzhak whacked himself in the forehead with the heel of one well-manicured hand, pointed at the drink packet, and pointed at the glass.

Jamie picked up the packet and dropped it into the glass without tearing it or pouring it out.

"Like that?"

Yitzhak beat his head into the cash register. Twice.

From back in the kitchen, the smell of slightly carbonized burger began to waft into the diner proper.

"Is that my burger?" Jamie asked pointing back at the kitchen. "I think it needs to be burnt more."
