Luke's Diner; Wednesday [ 12/19 ]

A.J. knew it was just going to be one of those days for him. He hadn't slept well the night before, he'd accidentally stepped on one of his projects getting out of bed this morning and then there was the fact that he couldn't get a song stuck out of his head. Which was fine. Typical. It happened on occation.

But this was not just any song. This was the the worst song in the history of the world. And it was not. going. anywhere.

Because A.J. is too busy bashing his head against the counter.

Mmmm, canon.

Officially probably going to crash at any moment, but I really do write my best crack in these hazy moments before sleep. :D

Either that, or I just think it's good, and then I wake up and wonder what the heck I was thinking.

Beauty was definitely in need of an A.J. fix, so she headed over the minute her lunch break started.

She was a little surprised to see him smacking his head against the counter, though.

"Um...?"

[ooc: People have their grubby little hands all over my schedule today, so I may disappear without warning now and again. :/]

The banging stopped for a mere moment. A.J. took a second to consider that the last thing he wanted was to be stuck with Rex Manning in his head when he tried talking to Beauty. To anyone, for that matter, but particularly her. So the banging continued, his head hitting the counter to punctuate his words.

"Get. Out. Of. My. Head!"

That done, he drew in a deep breath, straightened with his hand running through his hair, and tried to give Beauty his best smile, which just turned out weary and distracted and mostly miserable. "Hey, you. What's up?"

You call me on my carphone with that je ne sais quous...

...Uuuurrg.

"Oh my God, A.J., don't do that!" Beauty reached out toward him just as he stopped with the head-banging and straightened, and she frowned worriedly at the expression on his face.

"I'm...I just came to see you. It's my lunch break. What's wrong?"

"All day," A.J. said, with heavy emphasis on his words so that Beauty could understand the direness of the situation, "it's been stuck in my head, over and over and over. The worst song in the history of mankind and I can't get rid of it."

He let a little, slightly whimpering pout through. For good measure and sympathy points.

Oh no, not the pout! Beauty climbed up into a stool and reached out for A.J.'s hand. "Maybe if you sing it through, the song will go away? Is it a song you don't like?"

She'd had that happen, little tunes stuck in her mind that wouldn't leave. But never to the extent that it upset her the way A.J. seemed upset.

You say you need a little of my ooh-la-la...

A.J. grunted, because the lyric floating through his head was annoying enough to distract him from the fact that he was, indeed, getting the sympathy points he was striving for. "It's a song that I loathe, and it's very annoy and persistent...."

Yes, definitely racking up the sympathy points. Beauty bit at her lip thoughtfully. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

Ino showed up way late in the afternoon, took one look at A.J., and burst into laughter. And yes, her hair was still blue.

A.J.'s eyes shifted (I know you get lonely in your canopy bed), because that right there just seemed like too easy of a set-up.

"Well," he said slowly, "you could try to help get it out of my head..."

But don't worry, baby; I'll be running ever red.

He ended up punctuating the suggestion with grunt as he heard that in his ear. So. Baaaad.

Her hair could be alternating colors of the freaking rainbow right now and A.J. wouldn't care. From where his head rested on the counter, he let out a groan. "Whaaaaat?"

Freaking Rex Manning.

"I'm laughing at your pain," she told him, grinning, then looked briefly concerned, "unless it's something actually awful." Pause. "Is it?"

"What do I need to do?" Beauty replied quickly, because she could tell it was really bothering A.J., and she hated to see him distressed. Especially if there was anything at all she could do to help. She squeezed his hand reassuringly.

"It's Rex Manning," A.J. said by way of explanation, without bothering with the fact that he knew she probably wouldn't know who that was. And was glad for it. He envied her terribly right now because of it. "So that's bad enough. And? You're mean."

His head was still against the counter, but he was still pouting at her.

His pout only made her grin widen. "I've heard that before." She'd heard worse before too. "What's Rex Manning?"

"Well," A.J. looked at her hopefully, "know any good songs? I keep trying to think of something, but it's like there's this big wall of this travesty that nothing else can get through when I try. So annoying."

"You mean, besides an abomination to mankind?" A.J. asked, lifting his head finally.

"Well, yes." Ino hummed something that sounded awfully girly. Probably because it was. Don't say you love me, you don't even know me... "Besides that."

"You...want me to sing something?" Beauty said hesitantly. She'd do it, of course, for A.J. But she wasn't sure he'd really want to hear it. "I'm not very musically inclined."

Still, she wracked her brain for a song that she felt comfortable with. Then, very softly, she started to sing.

"With an honest old friend, and a merry old song, and a flask of old port, let me sit the night long; and laugh at the anger of those who repine, that they must swig porter while I can drink wine."

Annette snuck in, or hopefully she got away with sneaking in, and left a rather large gift bag on the counter for A.J. A.J. straightened a little more, almost as if pulled by the arch of his eyebrow at Ino's humming. It wasn't that it was girly that caught him, because, come on. He played with her hair and she freaked out over it's color, so, in his mind, she was totally already pretty girly, but the thought that maybe, just maybe, she had something equally annoying stuck in her head, too.

"He's a signer. I use the term lightly. Really big in the eighties, and then, in my time, he puts out this song, right? Say No More, Mon Amour." And, in saying the title and thus part of the chorus, A.J. couldn't stop himself from singing the next bit: "I'll bring my lovin' right to your front door."

A.J. made a face that looked rather like he was gagging. "Awful stuff. My best friend Corey wouldn't stop listening to it, either. And now I can't. Get. It. Out. of. My. Head."

He hadn't seen her play with flowers yet. Ino could get way girlier. She wrinkled her nose. "You too? I've had the same song stuck in my head all day - I know it off by heart by now - and I'm pretty sure that I've never heard it before today."

"Then you're still one up on me," A.J. commented. "Because I've definitely heard this one more often that I'd ever want to admit." He paused, and then offered a light grin toward Ino, because misery did love company. "What's your song like, then?"
