Fandom Post Office, Wednesday (12/19)

Beauty hadn't grown up with the flashy holiday trappings she was starting to see cropping up, but they were making her feel a little homesick anyway. So while she sat behind the counter, she composed a set of letters home. Maybe she'd ask A.J. if he'd do a quick drawing or something to include.

She's a bit subdued today, but quite willing to talk. Unless you come during second period or her lunch break, that is.

Ino showed up, after lunch, with a letter in one hand, and singing half under her breath. "Don't say you love me, you don't even know me..."

She approached the counter, "Hello?"

Beauty was getting a little curious now about all of this singing, and decided she was thankful to whatever was keeping the music out of her head.

Or else it was just biding its time.

She smiled and set down her pen, surprised and sort of pleased at having an actual customer. "Hello. Can I help you?"

"I hope so?" Ino set the letter on the counter, and tucked a strand of blue hair behind one ear, "How fast do you think this can get back home?"

Beauty glanced at the post box, and then rummaged behind the desk for a delivery schedule. "Well, I've always imagined that there must be some magic at work here, to get all of the post to where it's going. Um, can you tell me where your letter is headed?"

"Konohagakure. Hidden Village of the Leaf." Ino made a face, "It's in an alternate version of Feudal Japan if that helps you any." Don't say your heart's in a hurry, not like we're going to get married... She shook her head, trying to get rid of the song.

"Oh, that sounds really interesting," Beauty murmured, smiling at the girl. She knew almost nothing about the East, but now she mentally added 'feudal Japan' to her list of things to read up on.

"Maybe...a few days, I guess?" she hazarded, tilting her head curiously as the other girl shook hers. "Is everything all right?"

Ino wrinkled her nose, "Just a song stuck in my head. I can't decide if I like it or hate it and I've got no idea how I know because I've never heard it before." Then, realizing that there were two ways the other girl could've meant that, "The letter's for my Dad, for one of the present's I wanted to give someone. It's probably going to be too late in getting back for the holiday though."

"A.J. was having that same problem," Beauty murmured thoughtfully. "It's something weird going around, isn't it? Like everyone turning into animals?" She wondered what song she'd get stuck with.

Taking the letter, she nodded understandingly. "I think we can mail it at handwavy special delivery rate, and it should get there by the end of the week. Will that be all right? I'm sorry you can't make the trip yourself."

"I'll have to stop by later then," Ino grinned, "and laugh at him." Because she was like that.

She shrugged, "That'll be fine, it'll take Dad at least a few days to get what I want anyway, and then with it getting back to me... I know it's late, but I didn't even know there was a holiday until a few days ago." Ino looked sheepish, "I'm pretty sure that who I'm giving it to will be understanding though."

"You're a friend of A.J.'s?" Beauty asked, unconsciously turning up the wattage of her smile as she spoke. She stuck out her hand. "I'm Beauty and my mun is kind of sure we haven't met?."

She nodded understandingly as she sorted out the appropriate stamps for the letter. "We celebrate Christmas where I come from, but not really to the extent that they do here, I think. With all the decorations and parties and things that seem to be going on."

"Yes! He's a lot of fun." Ino shook the offered hand, with a speculative narrowing of her eyes, was this the girlfriend that Annette had mentioned to her? That smile made her think so. "I'm Yamanaka Ino, and this mun doesn't think they've met either."

"I think they should have, like, a list or something at the start of the year to tell us when the big holidays are." Ino offered, "We don't celebrate most of them in my world. Except New Year's, but I think almost everyone celebrates that in some form or other."

Beauty set down her pen and looked up, finding Annette's smile contagious. "Thank you! Um...and a happy christmas to you as well. I..."

Then she looked a bit stricken. "There's a traditional gift exchange, isn't there?" Oh God. She hadn't even thought about such a thing.

Annette just kept grinning. "Some people do, some people don't. It just depends on how one celebrates Christmas. I wanted to get you something."

"I think you put a lot more...work into celebrating it now than we do back home," Beauty observed, unable to resist looking through the basket and oohing over its contents. The errant thought that she wondered if A.J. would like this scent made her blush a little, and she looked up quickly.

"If that's the tradition, I want to do it too. I don't have a very long list of people I would gift. Is today special, that it should be done today? Do I have some time yet?"

He should very much like the scent. It is soft, subtle, a touch of blossomy goodness. It was sweet and alluring. It was one of Annette's favorite scents.

Annette giggled. "I'm just trying to get my gift giving done before the end of the week. I am going home after finals on Friday. I didn't want to miss seeing you and I knew you were working today. You have plenty of time still."

"You're going home?" Of course she was, and probably so were most of the students. Beauty imagined it was going to be awfully quiet around the school for the next couple of weeks. "Then I'll have to make sure and bring you your gift before Friday. But you're coming back, right?"

She nodded. "I am, I'm leaving Friday after classes and won't be back until the New Years party. I hope you come to that, it should be lots of fun." Annette gave Beauty a rueful grin. "Don't you worry about a gift for me, Beauty, but yes, I am coming back..."

She looked around for a moment before looking back at her friend. "You have any plans for the holidays?"

"There's a New Year's party?"

Sometimes, Beauty could be so oblivious to the things happening around her.

"No, I want to get you a gift. It's important to me. Maybe I'll send a little something back to my family as well." She shook her head at Annette's question. "No, I imagine I'll be doing a lot of reading, since there won't be classes to attend. Work on my Latin, maybe."

"Yep, well New Year's Even to be more accurate. But you have to come if you're here! It will be so much fun!"

Annette frowned a little. It was always sad to hear when someone wasn't doing anything for the holiday's or spending it with anyone. Impulsively she said, "You're more than welcome to come home with me."

"I will come then," Beauty promised. Homecoming had been a lot of fun, so maybe this would be as well. And if it turned out to be like the parties she used to get dragged to in the city, she could always slip away.

Annette's offer made her smile gratefully, but she shook her head. "I'm a little scared of leaving," she admitted. "A.J. and I have been talking about it. About how maybe so long as I don't go back home, I can go anyplace I want, but it still makes me nervous. That sounds cowardly, doesn't it?"

"Yay! I am going alone so I do hope to see you there and maybe hang out with you for a bit."

Annette shook her head and gave Beauty a comforting look. "It doesn't sound cowardly at all. And I understand Beauty, I really do. I would never want you to go anywhere where you are just not comfortable and being here? Well, it sort of grows on you, doesn't it? Giving you a sense of comfort and well being."
