The Preserve, Friday Night

[intraspective]

After a completely handwavy dinner date at Ching Tai where they'd had the bright idea that it'd be a whole lot of entertainment to seize the moment and try out the shuriken Kabuto had given her for Christmas, they wandered out to the preserve.

Ino grinned over her shoulder at Kabuto. "You're totally going to mock me, aren't you?"

This was totally a ninja sort of date.

"Only if you do poorly," Kabuto half-agreed, taking Ino's hand and giving it a light squeeze. "I'm out of practice myself, though, so I doubt I'll be able to taunt you too much." Ninja dates were far, far more interesting than normal ones.

And besides, they'd been normal enough for one day. She laughed and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek before tugging him on further. "If you tease me too much, my aim might just go mysteriously awry and totally start heading for you."

"Well, that would just make more practice for you, wouldn't it?" Kabuto laughed. "Provided I allowed you to hit me, of course." He stopped when they reached a clearing, looking around and finding it suitable. "Will this work for you?"

[intraspective]

"All things are equal in the dark." She said, looking around the clearing. "But this'll do nicely." Pause. "And if you do let me hit you, and then make me heal you... I hope you realize you'll be carrying me back to the dorms."

"You'll learn how to make it less tiring, eventually," Kabuto told her, taking a kunai that he'd handwavily picked up from the weapons locker earlier from his pouch and spinning it in his hand. "Think you can hit your targets in the dark?"

[intraspective]

"I could hit your head," Ino said sweetly, "your hair isn't any better at blending in than mine." She considered it. "I'll certainly do my best."

"You could aim for my head, at least," he corrected, catching the kunai and throwing it at one of the trees around them, where it stuck nicely.

"If I'm lucky, maybe I'll hit your ego." She muttered, with a roll of her eyes. "That the target then?"

Kabuto laughed. "If you want it to be. Go for it; see how they fly."

[intraspective]

Ino twirled one of her shuriken in one hand to get a better feel for the balance before letting it fly. It hit the tree easily enough, but she was frowning slightly. "It feels weird."

"Different than kunai, or shuriken in general?" Kabuto pulled out one of his standard-issue ninja shuriken, studying it.

"Than my shuriken." Ino said, "I'm perfectly capable of compensating for the difference between kunai and shuriken. These just fly differently, it's a bit disconcerting."

"They're shaped differently," Kabuto agreed. "It makes sense that they'd fly differently, too." He threw his own shuriken, embedding it into the tree right next to Ino's.

"Want to try one?" Ino offered, "So you can see?"

"Sure." Kabuto smiled, taking one of them. "Thank you." He spun it in his hand, then tossed it in the air and caught it again, getting a generalized feel for it.

Ino grinned and tucked her arms behind her back as she watched him. "Some time this century might be good." She said teasingly.

"Never rush when you want to be accurate. Especially if you aren't familiar with your weaponry." Kabuto tossed the star, caught it, and threw it all in one sweeping movement. It hit the tree between the other two shuriken. The silver-haired ninja gave Ino a smug look.

"Congratulations, you've proved you're better than me." Ino looked exasperated, and a wee bit impressed. "Which, you know, isn't exactly a surprise."

"I've had more practice," Kabuto said modestly. "You're social; I'm a workaholic."

"I work hard," she said, whacking him on the arm, "I just play hard too."

"I've devoted weeks at a time to single topics," Kabuto admitted. "I don't take the time out to play."

"You should," she grinned playfully up at him, "it can be worth it."

"But work is play," Kabuto replied, smiling brightly at her.

"You're an idiot sometimes." Ino told him, before kissing him.

"Hmm," Kabuto murmured noncommittally, content with just kissing her. After a moment, he pulled back. "Weren't you going to do something with those?" he pointed at the shuriken.
