Joanna was in the ticket booth, smoking a cigarette and paging through a glossy fashion magazine. There was a large sign hammered into the ground outside that read:

Use the course list to mod your game play. Niagra Falls is particularly spectacular today.

They're fast. Real fast. Try not to eat too many bugs.

As instructed by Adam, Lucas found his way to the mini golf course. If he wanted to be able to afford to do much of anything, he'd need a paying job. Hopefully a well paying job.

"Miss Stayton?" he asked, stopping in front of the ticket booth.

There is a concessions stand with all that typical tasty concessions type food. Mod Andrew if you want anything.

Food. Need.

Joanna was used to people knowing who she was, so she wasn't surprised to hear her name in an unfamiliar voice. "Tickets are half price if you're accompanied by a new student," she said lazily, flipping another page. "Go grab some friends and come back."

She tapped her cigarette ashes into a crystal tumbler sitting on the counter and took a drag.

Lucas was surprised by her brush-off, but he was the one looking for a job, so he decided to try again.

"I was actually interested in the 'now hiring' part of your sign," he said, rubbing the back of his neck.

Sleep. Need.

Joanna glanced up and quirked an eyebrow. "Fill this out," she commanded, sliding a one page application and a pen towards the boy.

"What's your name?"

"Lucas Scott," he replied, picking up the pen and looking over the application. "What's your starting pay here?"

Joanna leaned forward so she could get a better look at Lucas. "We pay very well, Mr. Scott," she replied. "Twice the minimum wage. It just wouldn't do to have employees that can afford to dress adequately." She had totally just made that. Joanna had no clue what they paid. That's why she had accountants.

"Why would I want you to work for me?"

"Because I have experience with mini golf courses," he'd helped Haley build that course on the roof, after all. "And I've worked as a mechanic in my uncle's shop and I'm sure some of that experience would carry over to go kart repair." He watched her for any reaction.

Joanna nodded. "That's very impressive," she said impassively. "Turn around for me." Joanna waved her index finger about in a spinning motion.

"Turn around?" he muttered, but turned as requested.

Joanna frowned. "No good," she said. "Take your shirt off and do it again."

Lucas was a little confused. "It's kind of cold out..." he pointed out lamely. "Do I get the job if I do?"

"Do you always question your employers like this?" Joanna asked, tapping her finger nails impatiently on the counter top. "Did I mention that I give seasonal bonuses?"

Lucas had never had a seasonal bonus before. He could stand a momentary chill if it meant he'd have money to spend. "I hope it's a good bonus," he told her, pulling his sweatshirt over his head.

"Very nice," she commented, staring a bit. "You're hired." She grabbed his application and folded it in half without even looking at it.

"Now, when can you work? Currently, I have openings every day but Tuesday." She gave no indication that he could put his sweater back on.

Lucas was a little cold, so he rubbed his hands over his arms while he tried to remember his schedule. "Um, how about Thursdays?"

"Perfect," she said. "I'll make sure Andrew is here early to help put you through the paces."

She tilted her head and touched a finger to her lips. "You should come by my house for dinner sometime. We can discuss your future with the company. Do you like caviar?"

"Uh, thanks for the job." Lucas started dragging his sweatshirt back on.

"I don't know anything about caviar," he admitted, not really knowing what to say to that.

"Well, that is a problem that must be rectified. There are certain basic things that any employee of mine is expected to know." She took a final drag off the cigarette and put it out in the tumbler.

"Are you single?"

Lucas didn't understand what caviar had to do with golf or go karts, let alone his relationship status. "What does my being single have to do with anything?"
