The Park, Tuesday Morning

She'd woken early, roused by vaguely remembered dreams and, feeling stifled by her apartment, had left quickly. Now she walked slowly through the park, quietly impressed by the amount of nature that this world had maintained.

It was... nice. Juli hadn't seen this much nature in years. No time, no need, not since...

Juli sighed and shook her head. That was enough of that, she told herself firmly, she could at least try to enjoy this while it lasted.

The weather was really good for January. Hoshi wasn't usually a jogger, but she didn't want to stay indoors today and felt she needed to do something different in her routine.

She slowed down when she came across one of the new teachers. "Good morning," she said.

Juli looked up, slightly startled as she pulled her mind out of the clouds, she smiled at the girl - a student most likely - and said, "Good morning to you as well. Are you taking advantage of the weather?"

"Trying to. I just couldn't stay indoors any longer," said Hoshi. "You're one of the new teachers, aren't you? I think I saw you at the picnic on Friday."

"I mostly stayed on the edge of the crowd," Juli admitted, "but yes, I was there. And you are correct, I am teaching this semester. Dr. Juli Mizrahi," she introduced herself, "and yourself? A student, I'm assuming."

"I stayed near the edge too. I'm not too good with crowds," she said. "My name is Hoshi Sato, and yes, I'm a student. This is my second semester here at Fandom."

"Different reasons, same outward result." That got a faint smile. "I merely wished to grasp a feel of the social dynamics. Is Fandom much different from your home? If you don't mind me asking."

"I don't mind," said Hoshi. "It really is different, mainly because I'm from 140 years in the future from now. The technology is different, plus my world has an extra century of history that affects everything."

Juli looked skyward. "But from this planet?" She asked, to make certain. "In essence, still from 'Earth'?"

"Yes, I'm still from Earth. Kyoto, Japan, in fact, though in my time, they have a lot of people living in cities on the moon," replied Hoshi.

"The moon..." She looked back at Hoshi, and said quietly, "In my time we've lost all knowledge of where 'Earth' is. We've expanded all over the universe but lost our homeland."

"Wow," said Hoshi. "I can't imagine that ever happening. In my time, we've been able to travel in space, but not very far. They're building a ship right now that will go faster than any of our other space ships, but they keep running into problems."

"Well," Juli said, "no doubt you'll get there soon enough. I'm a lot further ahead in time than you. Over four thousand years..." she offered a smile, "We've come a long way since now."

"It's nice to know we'll get there eventually," said Hoshi with a little bit of a smile.

"All things in their time," Juli agreed, "but keeping perspective can be difficult at times."

Hoshi thought about what Commander Archer had told her, how some people on Earth were frustrated with the Vulcans because they observed but would not help with the development of the new warp engine. "Yeah, I've seen that for myself," she said.
