Wonders of the World, Thursday [1/10]

It was his first day, but Lucas was a little late. Maybe drinking on work nights wasn't such a good idea after all. Andrew glared while he showed Lucas around the course and track, but when Lucas asked Andrew if there were any go kart repairs that needed taken care of, Andrew's face lit up like a Christmas tree.

Which would explain why Lucas was off to the side of the ticket booth trying to salvage the go karts that had been injured during Joanna's assault on the causeway during the plague.

Of course, Andrew had just laughed when Lucas had confusedly asked, "What plague?"

He's got his headphones in, so scream loudly.

Melody came in about lunchtime, bearing a basket of food. "Hi Lucas! So is eggless egg salad okay?"

Lucas pulled off his headphones and greeted her with a broad smile. "Hey, Melody, that sounds great."

Melody blinked. No one ever thought her food sounded great. She handed him a sandwich, and added, "and there's chips and grapes and stuff too. How's work today?"

"Thanks," he said, taking the sandwich. Who was he to complain about free food - his mom taught him better than that. "Work is kinda slow, actually. I'm glad for the distraction."

"The record store's usually pretty slow too," Melody said sympathetically. "I end up teaching my cats tricks 'cause I don't have anything better to do. Oh, and used CD frisbee."

"What sorts of tricks can cats do?" Lucas asked. "Normal stuff like sit and stay?"

"That, shed, play the keyboards," Melody said. "We're working on singing but Flopsy's a diva and outyowls the other two and it's so unfair."

Lucas grinned, "Wow, sounds like you have some musical pets. Do you sing with them?"

"Only backup," Melody said. "My voice isn't good enough to be out front. And I drum with them. Do you have pets?"

"Unfortunately, I don't have any pets. But you must have a band," Lucas said. "Do they live here in town, too?"

"Good guess, are you psychic?" Melody asked. "But no. They're back home in Riverdale." Melody made woeful eyes at that. "I'm here until our singer finishes her solo record, and that's going at the speed of a turtle. A SLOW turtle."

"An injured, three-legged turtle?" he offered, completely amused. "I think I like that mental image."

"Yes! And it's on a treadmill, and the treadmill makes the tape deck go, and that's why her record isn't done yet," Melody giggled.

"Maybe you could train your cats to help her speed up the process," he grinned. "It might inspire her at least."

"Genius," Melody said. "You must do really really well in school."

"I do okay," he admitted. "This kind of school isn't what I'm used to, so we'll see if that makes a difference."

"How's it different?" Melody asked. "I graduated back home, so I never had to go to school here."

"For example," Lucas started, "This afternoon I have a class called Fandom Invasions. Sounds a little different from P.E."

"But more fun," Mel said. "You'll probably learn about dinosaurs and vampires and stuff, and not just run laps and play volleyball."

"Volleyball I can get over," Lucas agreed. "But now I'm wondering if we're going to meet the vampires, and did you say dinosaurs?" Really, he shouldn't be surprised anymore.

Melody gave a solemn nod. "It happened when I went away for a little bit, but they were really huge and stompy. But not as bad as zombies that were here a long long time ago. Or plaaaaaaaague."

"I'll add dinosaurs to the list of strange things. Yeah, Andrew was telling me a little about the plague. Apparently Joanna tried to escape the island on go karts," his eyes were nice and wide in amusement at his boss' insanity.

"...No. Would they even go fast enough?": Melody asked, with even wider eyes. "I just stayed here and got sick. But I'm all better," she reassured, in case he might think she had given him cooties.

"They're capable of some impressive speed the way she has them souped up," Lucas assured her. "I'm glad you're better. The whole plague thing sounds really bad."

"It was like the worst flu ever," Melody said. "But they cured it!" Not really wanting to talk about the plague any longer, she looked for a topic change. "So how come you started going to school here?"

Lucas could follow a segue. "I needed a 'change of scenery' and my mom liked this idea better than me moving to Charleston with my uncle."

"Hope it's a good change," Melody nodded. "More interesting, anyhow." It was a good thing she didn't know about Chinese curses, or she would have referenced one.

She glanced at her watch and stood. "Ugh, I should get back to the shop and watch people not buy records. Hug?"

"Thanks for bringing lunch; it was the best eggless egg salad I've ever had."

Also, Lucas was possibly starting to like this town. "I can get with a hug."

"Thanks, you could bring me lunch if we do this again," Melody said.

She held her arms out for a quick squeeze before leaving. "Bye, Lucas."

He hugged her back briefly. "Bringing you lunch could be a great way to check out the music store."

"I'd even make the cats sing for you," Melody promised, before heading off.
