Devil's Nest, Wednesday Night

Kabuto was humming when he opened the Devil's Nest, mind still on Mizrahi-sensei's class. He cleaned the place completely, making everything shiny-clean in an OCD way, before working on the notes he'd started taking in class that day. He was elaborating on his own views and fleshing out things that Mizrahi-sensei had gotten him thinking about.

Expecting it to be a slow night, he smiled at Musubi and left her in charge of the bar so that he could focus.

It might take some doing to get Kabuto's attention, but Musubi's there for fast service.

Juli had really only stepped in for a moment mid-way through her ~~handwavy~~ walk through the park at night. She shook her hair out and glanced at the bar. "Mr. Yakushi?" There was mild surprise in her voice.

"Kabuto, please," Kabuto said automatically, looking at Juli and pushing up his glasses. "Good evening, Sensei. Can I get you anything?"

That got a faint smile out of her, "Kabuto, then. Good evening to you as well." She considered it, "A drink, I suppose, since I'm here. Nothing particularily strong."

Mixing Dr. Mizrahi a ~~handwavy~~ drink, Kabuto smiled and passed it across the bar to her. "That should do it. Thank you, by the way, for the interesting class today. I enjoyed it very much."

"Oh?" Juli looked amused, "Most of the class seemed to have found it rather depressing." She pursed her lips. "Death is however one of the biggest natural limits we have."

"Only sometimes," Kabuto replied vaguely, picking up his pen to ~~scribble~~ write a few more kanji to finish off the line in the notebook.

"Oh?" Juli looked intrigued. "What are your thoughts on it then?"

"My boss is...special." Kabuto smirked slightly. "Death isn't necessarily the biggest limit, when you know ways around it."

"There are many ways around it," she said, undisturbed by his smirk, "at least in my world. But I was more interested on your thoughts on the effects of resurrection in a society. We know it is possible - but should it be?"

"Why not?" Kabuto raised his eyebrows. "If they're powerful enough to do it, then who's going to stop them?"

"It's not a matter of stopping them," she said, sipping her drink, "merely considering all possible avenues of thought. Is it common, in your world, to be able to resurrect people?"

"Not terribly common, no. Orochimaru-sama can do it, and I can...to an extent." Kabuto had to write down a few more quick, neat characters. "They're more like puppets than people, with what I do. But it usually works with what I need it for."

"It's a bit different back home." Juli considered what he'd said, "Your puppets? What do you use them for?" Call it scientific curiosity.

"I can reanimate corpses for a short amount of time," Kabuto told her, shrugging. "It's generally useful, particularly when you want to distract your opponent. Being a medical ninja has its...advantages." Chakra flowed, blue-white fire, around his uplifted hand.

She eyed the fire coolly, "Would that hurt me if I were to touch it?"

Sipping her drink again, she nodded, "I can see how that would be useful. We don't use it that way. In fact, since the Life-Recycling Act was repealed we're not supposed to resurrect anyone."

"Not unless I directed it to. With the right control, however, it could hurt very much." He let the energy fade again, twirling his pen in the fingers of his other hand. "Is it common there, then? For people to be resurrected, I mean."

"It was an effort to save humankind from dying out." Juli said, "Once that was accomplished it was deemed cruel to bring people back to life when they'd wanted death. Nowadays the focus is more on cloning and creating Realians - organic artifical people."

"So instead of making new people, they're essentially re-using the ones that already exist?" Kabuto asked.

"There are restrictions on cloning and who can obtain permits to do so." Juli said, "But yes. Though Realians are entirely new tissue and consciousnesses."

"Yet they aren't humans," Kabuto pointed out. "So even if you make more of them, you aren't necessarily prolonging the life of your civilization." His eyebrows went up again. "Shouldn't you be allowing it to die out, since that's how nature intended?"

"Genetically," Juli said calmly, "a Realian is very nearly on par with a mutant in terms of their relation to humans. But mostly we use them as a way of keeping humans out of the more... dangerous jobs."

"Besides," she sipped her drink, "I never said we should follow nature. Merely that we should consider the consequences we cause in denying it."

Kabuto grinned. "I have to admit, Sensei. I like the way you think, as well as how you teach."

She lifted her drink in his direction. "You're not so bad yourself." Juli shook her head, "It's been a long time since I've taught."

"I couldn't tell," Kabuto told her honestly. "Instead of inane activities, you actually make your students think and look at things from prespectives different than their own."

"You can't learn without questioning." Juli said simply, "I'm not trying to explain anything new when I teach, just make people reconsider what they already know."

"There's certainly nothing wrong with that," Kabuto said. "People usually know more than they think they know. There are always the exceptions," and Kabuto could think of a few of them easily, "but in general..."

"In general it's merely a matter of applying what you've already learnt in new ways. Which, admittedly, can be hard going at times."

"It can. But it's all the more interesting because of it." Kabuto tapped the base of his pen against his notebook. "...What writing system do you use?" he asked suddenly, curiosity in his voice.

"The english alphabet mostly." ~~Though since the games came from Japan who can tell for sure?~~ She tilted her head at him. "Why?"

"Simple curiosity." Kabuto grinned. "Details are always interesting, even if they seem insignificant." That, and he liked to know how many people could possibly read his notebooks.

Her eyes flickered with amusement, "There is no such thing as an insignificant detail. All of it matters."

"Not everyone believes that," Kabuto pointed out. "Even if we do." It was partly because of his OCD that Kabuto liked details.

You needed to pay attention to details if you worked on creating artificial people. Juli was so used to it that it was second nature. "Their short-sightedness." She said, with another sip of her drink, "Let them get left behind if they're not even going to try."

"That's the law of nature, isn't it?" Kabuto asked innocently. "Learn and adapt or die?"

That got a real smile out of her. "Then perhaps it's more accurate to say it's a limit they must learn to surpass."

"Perhaps with your guidance, at least the ones in your class will be able to do so." Kabuto bowed his head slightly to her.

"Perhaps," Juli conceded, finishing her drink, "but I cannot force them to learn anything. It wil be up to them."

"Of course." The ninja pushed up his glasses, lenses catching the light and reflecting it briefly. "I'm pleased to be your assitant, should ever the need arise for you to use me."

"I'll keep it in mind." Juli would make no promises either way.

"All I can do is offer." Kabuto smiled. "Would you like another drink?"

She waved him off. "No thank you, one was enough for me. I still have work I want to finish before retiring for the night."

"I wish you well with that," He said, taking the glass to put it aside for cleaning. "Thank you for coming by tonight. It was nice to speak with someone who understands things a bit better."

"I can understand that," Juli said, "I expect I'll see you around. Good working on your own projects."

"Thank you very much, Sensei." Kabuto bowed politely. "I'll see you in class, if not elsewhere."

"No doubt we'll run into each other again," she half-agreed, "Good evening."
