Book Haven: Thursday 10-5 [1-24-08]

Millie opened the store quite cheerfully and set out tea and goodies for any customers.

She also made sure the HELP WANTED sign was still up prominently in the window.

She's around!

After hearing what happened to Liir on the radio, Glitch had decided to and check on him.

Too bad he had no idea that this wasn't a day that he'd be working.

"Hello?"

Millie smiled brightly at him. "Hello! May I help you?"

Glitch gave her a bit of a nervous smile, wringing his hands when he didn't see who he was looking for.

"I'm, uh, looking for Liir. Does he work today?"

"No," Millie said. "He will be here tomorrow though. He is quite a nice boy, don't you think? Though shamefully cared for!"

"Oh," he said, nodding. "Yes, Liir, he's in my class. From my world, too, actually. My world's past."

Glitch smiled, but his eyebrows were still knotted with worry.

"Is something wrong?" Millie asked, looking quite concerned herself. "Is there anything I can do?"

"There was something about him on the radio last night. I," Glitch paused. "I'm just a little worried."

He sighed, and tried to show her a reassuring smile. "Guess I feel responsible for him, since we're from the same place."

Millie nodded. "I too. I worry about him. He seems such a lost soul. But very proud. He let me fix his clothes, but would not let me give him new ones."

Glitch did smile at that. "I don't think it's pride so much as, he doesn't know how to let people do things. Not for him, anyway." He was remembering, in parts, the story Liir had told him about his life. None of it seemed exactly partial to letting anyone become accustomed to receiving much of anything.

"He's got some now, though. Clothes. I sent for some from our world a couple weeks ago, and he's bought some, too."

Millie nodded. "I made sure he was paid the first day he worked so that he would have some money to do and get whatever he needed."

"Thank you."

Glitch didn't know what he was thanking her for, exactly. For helping Liir? For giving the boy some of the care he deserved? Something like that.

Millie met his eyes calmly. "I have no family of my own. The people I come to know, the students who work for me... they mean a great deal to me. Liir is one of mine now and I wish to help him as much as he will allow me."

Glitch nodded, synapses firing off. Some still in worry, others in gratitude.

"Ditto. I don't think he has anyone to look after him, so I'm trying. To look after him, I mean."

"Then perhaps we can work together," Millie said with a nod.

He smiled. Glitch? Need help? Yes, please.

"That would probably be good," he said, a nervous hand tracing his zipper. "I can't even find him."

"Is he missing?" Millie asked looking even more concerned. "I have some... abilities. Perhaps I would be able to locate him if he doesn't turn up soon."

Glitch turned serious, almost suddenly. "I don't think so. Something happened between him and another student yesterday, and then him going flying. I just wanted to check on him and make sure he's really ok."

Millie nodded. "Well, if he does not come in for work tomorrow I can let you know and perhaps we can go look for him," she said, then flushed. "Oh dear, except that I do not know who you are. Nor have I told you my name. I am Millie."

Synapses snapped in embarrassment, but Glitch tried to not let it show on his face. He stuck out his hand and said, "Glitch. Or, Professor Ambrose. Or just Ambrose. Any, uhm, one of them you'd prefer, really."

"Should it not be whichever one you would prefer?" Millie asked curiously as she shook his hand. "I feel a bit at a disadvantage, having only the one name."

"Oh, well," that caught him off guard. Glitch considered his options: Long story or Short story. He went with 'short.'

"I used to be Ambrose, and then, well, I was Glitch for a while. Now that I'm back together again, I can't figure which one fits best."

Millie nodded. "Perhaps I will try them both out and see which one seems to suit you best. Is not Glitch a negative word, though?"

"It was what they called me when I had half a brain." Glitch gestured to his zipper. "I'd have little glitches, or big ones. Synapses still don't fire quite right," he said, hoping they wouldn't take this opportunity to demonstrate.

She frowned. "That is not kind of them," she said carefully. "I believe I will call you Ambrose, then."

When it was put that way, it was probably the first time Glitch had wanted to be called Ambrose since he had been Ambrose.

He smiled at Millie and nodded. "That's fine."

There was something else, synapses snapped to remember it. Oh, yes, Liir.

"And you'll let me know if you see him tomorrow? I could come by and check again."

"I will," she said. "And yes, please do stop by. I'm sure he would be glad to see you. And I live just upstairs, so I am quite easy to find."

Glitch nodded, confirmation and an attempt to lodge the mental note Visit Liir's store tomorrow in his synapses for longer than a few minutes.

"I'll be here tomorrow, then. If he isn't here, then," then what? He tried to not think of the implications of him not being there. "We can look for him if he isn't."

He nodded again.

"Yes," she said firmly. "Yes, we will."

"Thank you, again."

Glitch fidgeted with his sleeves a little, synapses crackling again with worries and 'what ifs.'

"I'll see you tomorrow."

"You are most welcome," Millie said, "And yes, you will."

Weekends? Thursday?

No world ending today, however much one might want it!
