Pixie Dust, Monday, 1/28

Romeo was thoughtful this morning, his conversation with Liir of the night before making him wonder if he would trade his experiences for a blank slate and one perfect kiss.

He was pretty sure he wouldn't, but the idea still had him adding a splash of Bailey's to his coffee and arguing with himself over how early was too early for absinthe. (11, maybe?) Purely for the property of helping him think, of course.

Pixie Dust was open.

Naminé entered the store, carrying a small canvas bag with her. She smiled at the boy behind the counter. "Romeo?"

"That would be I," Romeo said, wobbling off the stool as he smiled back at Namine. The voice was familiar, somehow, but he couldn't place the face. "Do you look for anything in particular, or only myself?"

"My name is Naminé," she said, although she had an odd feeling they'd met before. Strange. She reached into her bag and pulled out a small egg, which appeared to be wearing a tiny paper suit and a tophat. "And I believe you already know Felix."

Romeo didn't squeal at the dressed-up egg, quite, but he did grin rather more than might be expected for a dressed-up foodstuff. "Son!" he said. "And nursemaid! I do thank you for bringing him here. Has he behaved himself well?"

"You're very welcome," she laughed, dropping a curtsy. "He's been astonishingly well-behaved. You're raising a gentlemanly egg. And he's quite handsome."

"He got that from his mother as well," Romeo laughed. "Or would, if he were not an egg." He fingered the little suit. "Did you make this?"

There was a rather deep blush to go with her nod. "Never lend an egg to a bored artist," she said. "I fear I'm also the reason your child received a name. Hard to care for Unknown Child all week."

"It's a good name, too, meaning happiness," Romeo noted. "And it saved Dojima and I any dispute over Italian and Japanese names." He was becoming even more convinced handing a child to a nanny was the way to go -- they came back named and clothed, and at minimal effort. "What type of art do you do?"

"I sketch," she explained. "Poorly. But I do it for my own self, so that doesn't matter quite so much. I suggested Felix, actually. I felt it went with his disposition." She laughed, nodding to the marker-face.

"He does have a lovely smile," Romeo agreed. "I write, not always well, but I could never claim to draw, even badly."

Naminé smiled at that. "If you lift your pen and draw stick-figures before you, you can claim to draw, but poorly. What sorts of things do you write?"

After a moment, she flushed. "Forgive me. Have we met? You seem ... familiar and not, both at the same time."

"Ah, but if I do not think to make stick figured, I cannot claim even that," Romeo returned. "I write poems, mostly."

He frowned at the girl's question. "Perhaps you remind me of someone," he decided. "But I do not think we've been introduced, at least."

"Perhaps we knew each other in a different place or time," she mused. "Or perhaps we've been introduced once or twice but been lost in the haze of everything else going on. I prefer the other, it means neither of us have to admit to impoliteness. I'm Naminé, Dōjima's big sister, and in my spare time I draw, converse with an insane juggler, and play nanny to unboiled eggs."

"Alternate realities?" Romeo suggested. "People have told me of those. Perhaps we met in one."

"And I am Romeo Montague, younger sib to John Sheppard, junior, and I knew not there were sane jugglers."

"Let us hope, for that sake, we were friends, and not enemies," she said, her eyes dancing. "Or else entrusting your egg-child to me might turn out horribly for us both. And I have yet to meet a sane one, so perhaps you're right. Maybe there's something terribly sanity-destroying within those balls. Or it's the other way, and only madmen would juggle."

Romeo, grinning, pretended to grab for Felix. "If you think you may be an enemy of times past, perhaps we need another nurse to save the child."

"And I think your last guess has it right, men must be mad to learn to juggle."

"I wasn't going to harm him," Naminé said, pulling the egg deftly away and laughing. "Merely indoctrinate him. Let him know of your evil plans and turn him against you. Also turn him against jugglers, for everyone's sake."

"I shall agree to weighting his mind against jugglers, " Romeo giggled, "But please spare me, good nurse. I hope he should respect his father, in his egglike way."

"It helps that he sees you here, earning your pay," she said with a smile. "And mine, for that matter. Should you be showing him your work duties?"

"Ah, of course," Romeo said, and took Namine and Felix on a brief tour of the store. "...and the clothes the owner thinks are too hideous to sell are in this room," he finished. "She lets me burn them sometimes." He picked up a sequined aqua miniskirt. "And I cannot blame her."

Naminé laughed. "I'm not terribly surprised, all things considered." She lowered her voice. "We've a mutual friend, she and I. She's very ... temperamental, from what I've heard."

Seen, really, but that part got complicated and it was easier to explain the other way.

"She is, but she seems to like me, so I will not complain," Romeo said. "Though her class is sometimes difficult, but I put that blame for that on Mr. Stinson."

"I don't believe I know him," she mused. "And I suppose I can't fault you for burning ... whatever this monstrosity should be."

It seemed to be striped leg warmers. With sequins.

"It's some kind of abomination," she said, wrinkling her nose.

"They are monsters, born not of man but of Satan," Romeo said, shuddering at the legwarmers. "Do you think Felix might enjoy seeing a fire, or is he so young that it might scar -- or, worse, roast -- him?"

Naminé conferred briefly with the egg, and then nodded. "I believe burning the infidels is child-appropriate. He should learn the wages of sin and all that. If it gets too warm we'll step back out again."

"An excellent day's work, then," Romeo said cheerily, and set about assembling the fire. Once it was burning away, he held the legwarmers ceremonially above the flames. "I could drop one in, and you do the other?"

"We should make a toast," she beamed, taking the leg-warmer from him and considering it. "To nannying? To fire? To the destruction of things that are wretched in the sight of all who are sane?"

"To all those things, and to Felix, may his life be as long as his his shell is hard," Romeo laughed, before dropping his legwarmer into the blaze.

"To new years and new starts, and to Felix. May he continue to not smell foul," she smiled, tossing hers in afterwards.

"Hoorah!" Romeo said, suddenly exuberant as he watched the flames rise. "To new starts, and new friends."

She smiled at that. "This job has lovely perks that way. When did you and my sibling want him back?"

"Unless your cos says different, I should be happy to pick Felix up early Friday," Romeo proposed.

"That sounds lovely," she nodded. "But I've class bright and early, first period. Would it be all right to get him before that?"

Romeo considered. Getting up early was not exactly his strong suit. "It may be better if I get him the night before, Thursday," he said. "I'll stop by before dinner to pick him up."

"My Thursdays are free," she laughed. "I'll make sure to have him packed and ready by then."
