Our Lady of Fandom, Sunday all day

As it was Sunday, Gabriel put the note up on the door:

Do it yourself Sunday Service.

He then sat down and waited, chweing on a donut. With some luck someone might show up to amuse him. Cat lay snoring on the altar.

[The church is open]

In her walks around the island Juli had noticed the church before, today though was the first time she'd gone near it.

She noticed the sign, and it startled a laugh out of her. Juli was quite certain, that wasn't how it was supposed to go. She slipped inside, wondering what kind of a priest would put up a sign like that.

Juli noticed the cat, and her amusment at a cat on an altar coaxed another smile out of her. She didn't have any food though. "Good day," she greeted the man, "your sign is quite interesting."

"Unexpected even," she continued, unperturbed, "since I'm sure that most churches have no such thing as a do-it-yourself service."

This was neither a compliment, or an insult. Merely an observation about what was a long-dead religion to her.

"It leads me to wonder," Juli said, "if you are even a proper priest at all, or if, like most of the island, so far out of your element that it does not really matter if you are or not."

She raised her eyebrows, still amused. "It is also proper," Juli informed him, "to actively respond when someone is talking to you."

"Cats," Juli said, "are not what I was talking about." Nonetheless, she smiled. "Most, I've heard, do not follow any sort of rule." It wasn't like she'd had much, if any, experience with a real pet.

"Depends on the rule," Juli said, "and how many ways there are to break it."

"Both," she told him, "I'm a scientist, so it's something I'm used to doing. There are rules you can break, and those you can't--and they can change daily and you must move quickly to keep up. Nothing is ever entirely for certain."

Juli just looked amused. "You did ask."

She laughed softly, more amused than anything. "As you wish," Juli tilted her head, and turned to go, "though I would argue that several sentences was not a lecture."

"Isn't everything?" She asked lightly, before slipping out of the church.

Still amused.

She'd have to visit again.
