The Perk, Sunday morning

River had felt the need for coffee and apple cake, as well as getting out of the dorms, so the Perk had seemed like a good place to go. She sat at a table by the window, sipping her drink and taking occasional bites of her cake, while focusing on making a complex pattern of sugar on the surface of the table.

Romeo's head was rather full of Juliet this morning, and, as such thoughts put him in a distinctly unholy frame of mind, he opted to skip church and get breakfast instead.

After getting his espresso and croissant, he spotted River and took a seat near her. "Good morrow, pirate queen," he teased, but a little tiredly.

[OOC: She's free to read him, he's probably blaring emo all over the place.]

"Of course, I should have thought of that," Romeo answered lightly. "Where might you find one, though?"

Romeo blinked at that; the girl's words were hitting a little close to home, and it was eerie.

"But are there enough ships to hold all the sad ones?" he asked. "The oceans should be full."

"And like the stars, the dead are always there, though sometimes out of sight and unthought of," Romeo nodded. "But jumping on a ship would not make them go away." Not, he thought, if going across the country didn't.

"And your crew, if they do not replace those lost, stand in for them," Romeo said. This was making sense, in a way.

He looked down at his drink. "An island might be rather like a ship."

"We'd be poor pirates indeed if our ship wasn't hidden," Romeo mused. "And no, not a queen." He studied the girl. "A friend, perhaps?"

He mentally ran down the list. Not Juliet, not least because he could not see someone else in that role. And not Benvolio or Balthasar. If anyone, she reminded him of Mercutio, with her way of speaking in riddles, but it felt as dishonorable as replacing his wife to replace Mercutio so soon.

"Could you stand for yourself?" he wanted to know instead. "Even if I am looking for a new crew, people are not so easily replaced as cogs in a machine."

"Then I am glad I gave it," Romeo answered honestly, some of his dark clouds starting to lift. "What about you, are you also looking for a new life?"

Romeo hadn't even thought about what he would do after high school, and he was actively choosing not to think about it. "The present might be all we can control, anyhow."

Thought patterns were the only warning before--

"Hey, River."

Kerrigan slid into the opposite seat with a cup of coffee balanced in her hands.

She settled in the chair, sipping her coffee with clumsy grace. Just woke up. "Haunting the Perk this early? Tell me it's not me being a horrible influence."

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Some people would say so." She leaned back in her chair. "Don't listen to them."

Kerrigan gave her an important nod, smirked, and toasted her with the coffee. "To early morning coffee."

"The usual," Kerrigan replied, after sipping some of her coffee. "Work out, ship out, clock out. You?"

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Now there was concern. "Do you need backup?"

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"If you're sure." Kerrigan's cup of coffee halted for a moment, just by her lips, before she took a sip. "Just keep an eye out."

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Might be the healthy choice." She paused, smirking. "But not the funniest one."

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Good strategy," Kerrigan agreed. "Gotta keep 'em waiting."
