Trooper Station: Wednesday

Where you come to visit the police department. Hopefully with donuts.

Or... you know. Report a crime.

Faith hadn't thought to bring donuts or report a crime. Instead she lingered in the doorway. "No lotus-stuff today?" she asked.

"Did my meditations last night," Dale responded with a friendly grin. "Do you wish to try another session?"

"Think I'll pass," she said, smiling faintly. "Not in the mood. Hey, why weren't you at the speed-dating drill?"

Dale frowned at that slightly. "The last time some of the dates tended to be... unpleasant. One of those dates almost ended up in jail for attempting to corrupt a minor."

Faith laughed as she took a seat. "You know you're not a minor, right? Some dude trying to pick you up doesn't quite fit the bill."

"His descriptions of trying to 'score' with teenage girls however did," Dale said frowning at the memory. "Additionally all my dates except for one were with men."

"Ouch." Faith frowned, slouching back in her chair. "You sure you didn't fill the form out wrong? Maybe the chick running it was trying to tell you something."

"Judging from the applicants there appeared to be a lack of interested women," Dale said with a small sigh. "Did you participate in it?"

"Wouldn't miss it," she grinned. "Shame you weren't there, you would've made a nice addition to my dance card."

"I'm afraid that kind of interaction would not be appropriate, Miss Lehane," Dale said with a friendly grin. "But I appreciate the sentiment."

She smirked back at him. "Heartbreaker. Add that to your list, right along with Boy Scout."

A small pained expression crosses Dale's face for a moment before returning to his normal grin. "I'll also at that to Coffee Achiever."

Faith's own smile faded slightly. "Sorry. Was that ... somethin' about that girl?"

Dale nodded sadly in response. "Romantic relationships and I tend to end rather badly."

He then took a deep breath and motioned Faith to sit down. "But we're not here to talk about me."

Faith leaned back with a shrug. "We could," she offered. "Might help my process to ... uh. I dunno. See what shit other people've gone through and ... not snapped and gone psycho. Or whatever."

Dale sat stiffly and clearly looked uncomfortable. "Well, then. I suppose you'd prefer to hear about my more recent relationships than my childhood crush on Marie Schlurman the proverbial girl next door."

"Whatever you wanna talk about," she said. She chewed her lip. "Or whatever you don't. Shouldn't be ... nosy or whatever."

Dale nodded as he sat back in his chair. "When I joined the force I had a mentor. He taught me almost everything I know about profiling a suspect. His wife... I fell in love with his wife. I tried not to let it affect my job or let it show. She was attacked and kidnapped. When she was found she was put under protective custody. My custody. Turns out she felt the same way. Her husband and my mentor became insane at some point. I even suspect he was behind the attack and kidnapping of his wife. He found us together. He killed her and gutted me. I ended up in a hospital for a couple of months. He went into a mental institution."

Faith shuddered, still not sure what to say in the face of such loss.

"Did you ... it must've been ... hard. I mean, it was, all of it, that sounds so stupid, I just meant ... not ... going after him. Gettin' a gun and marching into his room and ..."

"He was sick," Dale said shaking his head. "Completely insane. Any act I would have taken on him would be meaningless. Additionally there was always something in the back of my mind that wondered if my feelings for his wife caused part of this."

"You can't blame yourself," she said, shaking her head. "He went psycho. He was wrong in the head. That made him a loaded gun, just lookin' for a target. Nobody could've known that."

"If it were only that easy," Dale replied with a grim look. "After I returned to active duty I was assigned to a case in the Pacific Northwest. My mentor escaped from his prison and tracked me down. He started playing a game of chess with me via various newspapers and clues he would leave behind. Each piece of the board that he took? He'd also take a life."

Faith flinched. "People you knew? Just random grabs off the street? ... Fuck."

"The last person he kidnapped was the one he considered the queen," Dale replied grimly. "A woman I had become involved with. He was trying to enter into a place called the black lodge and used her as the key. When I tried to apprehend him... I ended up here."

"So ..." Faith bit her lip. "So you don't know what happened? Boom, you're here, not there?"

"I woke up in a grove of oaks out in the preserve," Dale replied. "Almost fifteen years later."

Faith thought for a minute, and then nodded. "Okay," she said. "We get weapons, we find someone that can get a doorway back, we get this guy and rescue that girl. Lodge won't have too many exits, he won't expect you to have back-up. How long you need to get ready?"

"The Lodge isn't a building," Dale tried to explain. "It's a place where malevolent spirits dwell. Someplace outside of our reality. And while I don't remember exactly what happened... I know that a simple jump into a new dimension won't get me Annie or my life back."

"There's gotta be a way," she said, shaking her head. "If you find it ... if you want back up ... you know where I am, right?"

"I do, Faith. And thank you," Dale said with a small grin. "I trust with some of this story my boy scout image is a tad tarnished now isn't it?"

"Still a boy scout," Faith said softly. "Just ... one that's seen some bad shit go down, that's all. You sure about ... finding a way back? People here can do crazy stuff. Just ... y'know. If it comes to that. Right?"

Because really? It's a DOINK-DOINK.

I cannot be convinced otherwise.
