The Arms Hotel Lobby, Saturday [3/1]

Hoshi arrived early for her shift with Porthos, who was content after an early morning walk. He even sat patiently on his little mat by the front desk while Hoshi discussed the basics of afternoon tea with Gunther.

The hotel had afternoon tea on Saturdays. Mary had told him so. He would've come by last week, but Turtle had moose to chase.

He opted to try the Russian Tea Cakes.

Stan was in a mood for tea. Luckily, it was a Saturday at the Arms Hotel.

Who will be happy to serve you or help you check-in.

And keep Porthos from pestering Gunther.

...and that would be a puppy. "Hello," Stan said, bending down to make friends.

Porthos wagged his tail at the nice gentleman who reminded him of Commodore Forrest.

"Do you want some skritches, little dog?" He started the skritches. Ear skritches.

"Please tell me you're not a student. Or Gunther," he muttered under his breath.

Porthos really didn't understand what the man was saying, but he wagged his tail anyway.

"Do you belong to someone here?" he asked, continuing to pet the dog.

Really, he wouldn't be able to take it if it were Gunther. The Mary-kitten thing was embarrassing enough.

"You didn't just wander in here off the street, did you? We'll have to find your owner."

"His owner is on deployment so Porthos is staying with me for a little while," said Hoshi, who overheard the last bit.

"Please tell me this is an actual dog and not a Fandom student? Or resident?" he said, turning towards the voice. "Ah, Hoshi. I thought that was you. So you know this critter?" he said, rubbing the dog's head. Said dog may have been mugging a bit for pettings.

"He's definitely a dog. His name is Porthos," said Hoshi. On hearing his name, Porthos got up and ran over to Hoshi.

Stan stood and brushed off his pants. "So he's yours? Or for the time being, then?" He smiled. Company was good.

"From the Three Musketeers?" he asked, quirking an eyebrow at the dog. "D'Artagnan, Athos, and Aramis?"

"That's right," said Hoshi, giving Porthos a small piece of cheese that she'd snuck out of Gunther's kitchen. "His owner just got new orders and couldn't take Porthos where he was going, and he thought Porthos would be happier with me. And the story I got is that there were four puppies in the litter and they were each named after a musketeer."

"So this is just a temporary pup," he said, smiling at Hoshi, the dog, and the cheese. It was cute!

[*facepalm* this one. just make sure Stan is out of the area before the dog starts gassing everyone from the cheese.]

"Just until the commander gets back from Vulcan. I'm not complaining, though, except when Porthos decides that he wants to go for late night walks," said Hoshi.

"Dogs are wont to do what they want," he said, looking at the dog. "At least he's not a Great Dane. He could pull you around without noticing," he said with a wink.

"No, I don't think a beagle puppy could really pull me around," said Hoshi.

Gunther happened to walk by and glared, so Hoshi scooped up Porthos to keep him from running after Gunther.

"You never know. It could be a super puppy. Or one that could fly, knowing this place," he said, looking around as if there were a flying super puppy that just happened to be here.

He noticed the glare. And that it was not directed at him. "Not a fan?"

"Well, Porthos is from my universe and they don't have super puppies there, so he should be fine," said Hoshi.

She glanced sideways at Gunther. "He had some trouble with Jeff's dog, from what I heard, so he hates them all."

"That's a relief," Stan said. "I don't think I could handle seeing a dog play fetch with an entire tree, or something of that nature." The mind...boggled.

Jeff's dog....Jeff's dog. Oh. Right. "I think that may be a force of nature."

"I guess as long as Miss Connell is okay with Jeff bringing his dog, there's nothing that Gunther can do," said Hoshi. "I didn't want to leave Porthos behind in my room anyway. We just got to Fandom last night and he's still getting settled."

"It can be a bit rough on the dog, being in a new place." He looked over at her. "And the caregiver, as well. Have you had pets before?"

"N... no," said Hoshi, a little surprised. "How hard can it be?" After all, she was a linguistic genius. It wasn't like taking care of a puppy was like learning Russian.

"You would be surprised. Need to have enough water and food, and this lil guy might need to be walked several times a day. Does he have any toys?"

Dogs have their own language. It usually consists of asking for food, asking for petting, asking for the lawn, or asking to be let go to go play with the squirrel/toy/cat/shinything/etc. Very complicated.

"The commander gave me all of his dog toys," said Hoshi. "I'm sure if I need anything else, I can just run out to Turtle & Canary."

"It is fairly well stocked," he agreed. "I'm sure you'll do fine."

Up early because I'm exhausted and will probably sleep in tomorrow, but after that, I'll be around all day.

And yes, the whole point of sending Hoshi on her spring break excursion was to return with a puppy.

Ack! And that was the one recipe that I didn't bookmark last night. It's fixed now. :)
