Book Haven - Friday - 10am to 5pm

Liir came to the shop a little early, did the dusting, checked the shelves and neatened them, and gave the floor a good cleaning before he finally put everything away and started to set up the tea and the pastries for customers. The last three brownies were put out as well, arranged neatly on a plate next to another interesting dish that smelled both spicy and sweet. He hoped Millie would come down to try them.

Then he settled behind the counter with his chosen reading material of the day, the cover of which he made sure to keep out of a certain bunny's eyeline. Said bunny settled on Liir's bag which he'd put on the counter and promptly went back to sleep.

Book Haven is open.

He was really starting to miss Andrew's usual form. But mostly that translated to planning to do something very nice for him that wasn't scritching and extra carrots.

Either way, he didn't have the first clue when that would be happening so he contented himself with the thought of doing some baking tonight so he'd have fresh treats for Andrew whenever he was back to normal again.

Millie poked her head in to see Liir. "Hello," she said cheerfully. "How are you today?"

He shrugged.

"I'm fine," he said with a smile; it just took him a moment to work one up. "Reading one of the books from the bin. Did you notice my ~~handwavey~~ note about the books I had read?"

"Oh yes," Millie said cheerfully. "I was quite pleased with the selection you chose."

She stopped and looked at him curiously. "Are you quite well?" she asked.

He nodded. Andrew was awake, so there was no way he was going to mention how very much he missed talking and cuddling and such with the other boy. Surely, Andrew was feeling the strain himself and things were much worse on him; he wouldn't add guilt (which he knew such a comment would) to the mix.

He smiled.

"Have you tried what I brought yet? They're over there near the tea and such. With brownies as well. You should definitely try one of those."

"No, I haven't," Millie said and wandered over to see what was there. "Goddess! They smell delicious! What are they?"

"A kind of squash. They named it differently where I'm from but here it's acorn squash. With a spiced sauce, some cheese, and meat. You do eat meat, yes?"

He always included meat since Altra didn't like anything with vegetables or bread.

"Oh yes," Millie assured him. "I eat most anything." S he took a careful bite of the dish, wanting to make sure she tasted it properly. "Oh,Liir! This is delicious! And the spices! Oh yes, I like this very much!"

He grinned, genuinely proud.

"I'm glad you do. It found something in a cook book I bought the other week and I thought it might taste fine with a little extra something."

Experimenting was fun.

...and since boyfriend was a bunny, it was culinary.

"It is quite wonderful," Millie said with a grin. "Perhaps you will give me the recipe for it?"

He nodded quickly before putting his book under the counter and pulling one of his notebooks carefully out from his bag. The sleeping Andrew-bunny woke up a little but a quick stroke between the ears set him back to dreaming.

He started writing the recipe out in a quick, steady hand.

Millie smiled at him. "Such a neat hand. I can write quite well if I must - finishing school taught me that much at least - but if left to my own devices it looks much like hen-scratching. I tell people sometimes that the writing of the language I first learned actually does look much like hen-scratching, but truly it is just an excuse for my own laziness."

He's perfected his hand through similar explorations of the shapes as he had of the sounds. When left alone, he would round the letters of words, the parts of them in his mouth to get a better feel for them, to know them better. When he'd come here, allowed to get notebooks and pens, he'd taken to doing the same on paper.

"Nanny had bad eyes," he said, which was true even if it didn't apply.

"So you learned to write neatly for her?" Millie asked.

"I learned to write from her, really," he said, which also wasn't a lie. He didn't discuss his practices with others, generally; it made him feel slow, behind. "She taught me a lot, really, for all that she was old and a bit batty."

"One of the priestesses in the temple was like that," Millie said fondly. "Crazy as anything, but sometimes if you were patient and listened long enough, you could learn amazing things."

"I've never learned amazing things," he said. Then he paused.

"Well, not yet. I suppose I might learn something amazing yet, considering."

"You have learned to make amazing foods," Millie said with a smile. "But then, you seem not quite able to see how amazing you yourself are, so perhaps you do not recognize the things you have learned either."

"Food is simple enough," he said with a small shake of his head. "If you pay attention and you care enough, there's nothing easier. It's not very amazing at all.

"I'm just glad you like it."

"Basic food is simple enough," Millie said. "This? Is quite amazing. Even the fact that you care enough to put such thorough attention and caring into it is quite wonderful."

He blushed.

"Thank you, Millie. I wanted to impress you, I admit, and I was hoping to make Altra happy with something that had so much meat."

And Karal as well, but he made all manner of things for Karal. Altra didn't like any of the cookies, though. Obviously.

"You succeeded admirably then," Millie said firmly. "For I am indeed most impressed."

She tipped her head to one side consideringly. "Who is Altra?"

"A Firecat," he answered. "He spends most of his time with Karal, but he's taken it upon himself to help teach me--"

Oh. He hadn't even told Millie.

"Er, that is... did I mention where I was going for Spring Break?"

"No," Millie said easily. "I know that Lana went to Mexico, but that's all."

"Oh."

He looked away.

"Well, um, I went to the O.Z., which is Professor Ambrose's world, if you knew. Which is my world as well, just in the far future. Anyway, I had to ask about something that'd been happening to me where I kept remembering things I shouldn't. And the Queen told me I had magic and gave me books so I could figure out how to train it properly so I wasn't having that trouble."

Millie listened, nodding. "I thought perhaps you had some sort of magic, but didn't like to say anything. In some places it is quite frowned upon, you know. I am glad you are getting help with it though."

Places like my head.

"I'm trying. I haven't had much luck in some ways."

"I would be glad to help in any way I can," Millie said quietly. "I do not know if your magic works in the same way mine does, but perhaps I can be of some use."

He blinked.

Three offers of help now.

"Perhaps I'll come in another day and we can go over the first text I was given?"

Millie nodded. "I should be delighted to help."

"Thank you," he said quietly.

"You don't have to, so thank you."

She grinned at him. "There is very little that I have to do these days," Millie said. "I think it would be fun."

He chuckled. He couldn't quite help it.

"If you think it will be fun," though he didn't, "I'll be happy to give it a shot. I warn you, though, that I'm rather slow."

"It's settled then," Millie said with a smile. "And slow or fast, it's all the same to me. I have nowhere else to go."

"All right," he said.

"Thank you."

She smiled at him again. "Wonderful. You know where to find me. And now I shall leave you to your reading. Thank you for the wonderful food."
