Wellspring Arms: Tuesday

Ed's nose wasn't stuck in a book this morning. It was a bit of a surprise to him too. Instead he was tapping the fingers of his right hand against the desk over and over, a dull metallic noise echoing through the shop as he did.

Just one more connection was all he needed to come up with, and he might even have a workable theory.

He might be absent-minded

Roy entered the shop, looking very much like he did this every day. "Edward," he greeted casually, as if he did that every day too.

Ed took a moment to realise someone else was in the shop. "Mustang," he said, looking up.

"You don't look like you're overworking yourself," Roy commented, glancing around the shop.

"Just learning from you," he shot back, leaning lazily back into his chair.

"I knew you really did admire me," Roy smirked.

Ed rolled his eyes. "Nah, I just know a good idea even when it's from an idiot."

"Harsh," he rapped his knuckles on the counter. "You seem to have gotten through last week alright."

He smiled for a second, looking at Roy. "Yeah, spent most of the time researching. Heard you went looking for trouble."

"Yeah," Roy shrugged a shoulder. "Apparently they weren't really made of stone."

"No shit," he said, rolling his eyes. "Where'd you end up?"

"London 1936," he replied as if Ed had never rolled his eyes at him. "It's an interesting city."

"Been there," Ed said. "During the war though."

Roy frowned slightly. "I couldn't do alchemy there."

That caught his attention more. "Told you," he said, leaning forward. "It's something with the energy in that world. Alchemy doesn't work at all."

"It's one thing to know it and quite another to find out," Roy replied.

Ed nodded. "Weird, isn't it. Did everything go okay?"

"Considering we were stuck in the past and apparently slept for 72 years? I suppose it did," Roy said, his brain still had trouble making that part work.

"Sure, but really since we're in the future, it shouldn't have been that big of a surprise," he pointed out.

Roy at least had the common sense to not give Ed his initial reaction. "No, not after I had seen the letters too."

Ed nodded. "Glad you're back," he admitted.

Huh. He hadn't seen that one coming and Roy nodded shortly. "Glad to be back," he replied.

He looked amused for a second. "I fed your cats once. Needed a book, and they looked hungry. Al's never going to forgive you for not taking that one."

"They're Aly's cats, I was minding them after she disappeared," Roy countered. "I would have made a bad pet owner back then."

"Yeah. And Al's got that girly-named cat now, so he's probably okay," Ed said.

Roy raised an eyebrow. "Girly-named?"

He waved it off. "Fluffy or Chuckles or something."

"Hrm," Roy shook his head. "I delivered your letters."

Ed ducked his head. "Thanks, Mustang. Everything go okay?"

He nodded. "We've got a fully operational police force now."

A broad if wistful smile spread over his face. "Congratulations."

He shook his head. "There's other people who worked more on this."

"Yeah, well, pass it on," he snapped.

If he was surprised at the response, Roy didn't show it. "I will," he said simply.

"Good," Edward said. "What else is going on?" If he sounded curious, it was just Roy making things up. Cause he really wasn't.

"Things are still uptight in the North," Roy replied, "but other than that the peace seems to be holding."

He nodded sharply, apparently not feeling that needed comment.

"What book did you take?" Roy wondered.

"Manheim's Principles of Fundamental Alchemy," Ed said with a shrug.

Roy nodded. "Don't forget to get it back," he commented.

"You think I'm going to steal your book?" he asked, looking offended.

Of course he would.

"Yes, but I should get a new batch delivered and if you want the books I bought..." Roy shrugged a shoulder. "I'll let you know when I get them."

"Really?" his eyes lit up. "When's the Lieutenant sending them?"

He shook his head with some amusement. "As soon as she has time. I don't expect it to take too long."

"Excellent. I'll be right there," Ed said. "Manheim's full of crap. You should just get rid of that book."
