The Arms Hotel Lobby, Tuesday

"You have forgotten the specials board again--" a heavy German accent resounded through the lobby. "...Why do you have your phone here?"

"Turtle might phone," Jeff mumbled, his chin resting on the desk.

"You spent all day with that girl," Gunther pointed out, hands firmly on his hips, "I heard your ridiculous radio broadcast."

"What if she doesn't phone?"

"Are you even listening to me?"

"Should I phone? Or would that come across as a bit overeager? You have to time your phoning, you don't want to catch on an upswing and get stuck in this mindless pattern of phoning--"

"Forget it," Gunther snapped, turning on his tail, and stealing Jeff's three-quarters cigar -- that's for the beret -- on his way back to the kitchen.

"Jeff!"

One good thing about the obsessive watching of the phone was that it made it easier for Turtle to pounce on Jeff again without him noticing it until it was too late, mwa ha ha.

Turtle squeezed Jeff in a hug, as tightly as her little arms could manage, which was to say, not very much, but maybe enough to knock a breath or two out. Or at least delay them slightly.

"Hi, Jeff," she said, turning her head so that it was on his shoulder.

"Hey, you're the one who had to go to work," Turtle said. "And I didn't go to France, I just went to the store, which, by the way, is okay, so I must have just interpreted the notes wrong."

Because that never happened, after all. She squeezed Jeff again.

"That's okay," Turtle said. "Work is a good thing, more or less, and, well, now we can maybe be even for when I accidentally shoved you off the bed last night..."

She had been dreaming of Chicago, and, in Chicago, sometimes you had to shove people out of the way to avoid truancy officers.

"Nope," Turtle turned a little pink across the cheeks and, apologetically, squeezed him again. She'd probably do that more. A lot more. But there couldn't be enough hugging, right? "That would have been me. Sorry."

The hugging gained some snuggling tendencies. "You know, I've done more traveling in the past few weeks...or months, depending on how you look at it... to last me almost a year."

"We won't have to do any more traveling for a good, long time," Turtle assured him, firmly, with a slight nod against Jeff's shoulder. "In fact, I intend on spending a lot of time doing the exact opposite of traveling. Do you know how backlogged I am on work being gone all that time?" She sighed, heavily, perhaps a bit overdramatically. "It's waited this long, though, it can't wait a little more. I'm not up to traveling at all right now, because this is still really nice...I told you that I missed you, right? Because I did. A lot..."

There had been a lot to do in Chicago, a lot to distract her, but there were also long stretches of time where she was alone and doubting herself and doubting things, and that was when it got to be the worse.

After her attempts to persuade George Michael to stay in bed with her all day had failed, Mary made her way down to the lobby and grinned. "Jeff! You're back!"

Mary looked at the phone. "Who are we waiting for to call?" she whispered.

Some women might have thought it stalkerish, but Mary had just said good-bye to George Michael for the day and was debating dropping by to see him at work. "Aww, that's so sweet! Did you guys end up in the same place in the past after that thing with the angels?"

"Oh, that must have been awful," said Mary. "Thank goodness the research team was able to find a way to get everyone back."

"I've always wanted to go to France," said Mary, "but the closest I've ever been is the Paris hotel in Las Vegas. That would be a nice spot for a honeymoon, though."
