Pixie Dust, Wednesday, 3/19

It wasn't his usual day, but nothing about this week was usual, so Romeo was willing to come in on what was normally his day off to make up for the missed shift on Monday.

Though "coming in" didn't have to mean "working," not right away. He was settled happily enough behind the counter with his laptop, IMing with Balthasar.

Who was, judging from his replies, not sure what to make of Romeo's sudden preoccupation with Victorian fashion.

Pixie Dust was open.

Rikku bounced into the shop. "Oh! Hi!" She waved to Romeo. "This isn't your day, is it? Or did you switch? I need help!"

Romeo shook his head. "I forgot work Monday, so this is to make up for it," he explained. "And you know what a straight line you just gave me, yet I shall not take advantage of it."

Rikku giggled. "Oh. Heeeeey. I'll remember that and give you a free pass sometime, yeah?"

She looked around. "No, see, I, uh. I need a dress? For someone ... around your height. Maybe a liiiiittle taller. I don't know how you dress-shop for guys, I mean, it doesn't come up that often, right?"

"Cabana boys do not wear dresses," Romeo said, wanting to lay down some ground rules on the fantasy he and Rikku had discussed. "Right?"

It took her a second, and then she giggled even harder. "Oh! No, no, you and Reno are totally safe. Whoa, that'd be pretty weird. Although I got Jude to do the whole pimp-and-ho thing once. That was kinda fun."

Rambling: on.

"No, this is for John Sheppard? I'm gonna pay him $20 to wear a dress and get incriminating pictures of it and then blackmail him."

As you do.

"Which of you was the pimp, and which his ho?" Romeo had to ask, trying very hard not to laugh. "And John's my big brother. In the name of kinship, perhaps I ought not show you a dress for him"

He paused. "You could persuade me with a cut of the $20." He'd use it to buy John a beer.

"Isn't he awesome?" Rikku grinned. "It's okay, he totally knows I'm doing this. Uh. He probably thinks I'm not serious, but really, he should know me better than that by now."

She considered. "Ten bucks? I don't mind throwing the bribes around."

"I'd have done it for five," Romeo informed her, then stepped back to a small, and slightly dusty, rack of dresses. "One of these might do, I think?" he ventured. "The store owner believes in catering to all tastes."

He held up one dress and then another.

"Ooooooh." Rikku bounced on her toes. "You're good at this! Okay. Totally need that stretchy one, and the blue. Hmmmm."

She looked around. "Do you think ... I should get a couple normal prom-kinda dresses? Just size 'em up and hope they fit? Something all festive, like this?"

She bounced on her toes. "I should get a few. Just to see. You think?"

"The regular dresses are rather nicer," Romeo allowed, fingering the green silk. "What about this or this? I think John would look quite fetching in a strapless gown."

"Oh my gosh." Rikku stared at the black one with the pink ribbon. "That's perfect. That's adorable. That one. It has to be that one. Or should I get a bunch of them and make him do a fashion show? I might have to bump the bribe up to $30, but I'm okay with that."

She bounced on her toes excitedly. "So. Great."

Romeo chuckled. "How much do you want to pay before you get to the bribe?" he asked. "We have that in a 16 and an 18, one of those should fit John."

He considered the dresses as he walked them to the register. "Do you think he would kill either of us for this?"

"I'm willing to spend quite a bit," she chirped. "I kinda have money, and what the heck, right?"

She brought the black dress, in both 16 and 18 - it never hurt to be sure - up to the counter, and then blushed. "Oh! Hang on. Just a sec."

She wandered off for about ten minutes, and then came back clutching a few personal items. "These too," she muttered. "With the, uh, the dress."

John needed lingerie to go with the dress, obviously. They could pretend it was in his size, right?

Romeo swallowed hard at the lingerie, and may have noted a few prices and styles for the birthday gift he still owed Yurika. Deliberately, he was picturing John -- and certainly no one blonde and bouncy -- in them.

"With the dress," he echoed, running a finger over the lace on one piece before folding and wrapping it. "Should John get shoes, too?"

"I think he'll be okay," she said quickly, still blushing. "I don't know what his shoe size is and I doubt heels go that big and that's way harder to guess, right? Maybe I make him try the dress on and come back for shoes. I can be all sneaky about it. Something like that."

"Something like that," Romeo agreed, ringing up the dresses and lacy ... things and putting them in a bag. "And I fear you're right about our range of shoe sizes, anyhow. Though I would hate for him to spoil the look with sneakers." He frowned. "I don't know where Mercutio bought his shoes."

"Jude just had small feet, I think," Rikku said, chewing her lip. "You need to see my pimp suit sometime. But I don't think Dojima's that mean, that we'd make you guys ho it out."

Really, Jude had volunteered, but it was always fun to freak out the guys.

Romeo was hard to shock, both by nature and by nurture.

So he wasn't shocked. Really. That was ... surprise, freezing his vocal cords.

Finally, he managed, "It rather depends to what size audience we'd be offering ourselves."

"It's a very nice pimp suit," Rikku said cheerfully. "We'll have to see. You should be glad Dojima's nicer than I am."

He should hope Dojima was nicer than she was, because she was evil.

Romeo kind of thought that Rikku was the less scary of the two of them. He looked distinctly skeptical.

"We are talking about the same Dojima, are we not? My girlfriend? She'll torture me, if she can."

Somehow, he didn't sound like he minded.

Rikku giggled. "The torture is all part of the fun," she announced. "That's why we do it. Why else do you think I show people Reno's tattoo? Because he'll --"

Blink. "Oooooooh, girlfriend? Really?"

"Because you think people want to see his pasty ass?" Romeo suggested helpfully, going a tiny but pasty himself at the memory.

But he beamed anyhow. "Girlfriend. Really. We talked about it Monday."

"Nooo, because he'll get mad if I do," she grinned. "And that means either he'll retaliate - which, hey, cool, prank war, or he'll get grumpy and ... um. Yeah."

Quick blush and toescuff and then pouncing on the other topic. "That's awesome," she said. "You guys are so cute, and now we need to ... do something. I don't know what. Double date. Definitely that."

"Prank war?" Romeo couldn't really understand why you would want that with your love, but, he supposed, to each their own.

"And definitely a double date, as soon as we are all together. Are you thinking Caritas, or something on a grander scale?"

"Something fancy," she said, mulling it over. "I don't know what yet. I don't know if anybody else would want to, either, I just think it'd be nice. Maybe I'm weird? Nah, you knew that already."

"You are weird," Romeo agreed. "But not for wanting at least one nice date ere this island turns us all into pink zebras. Perhaps we could go to dinner on the mainland this weekend, both for that and for Yurika's birthday."

I have absolutely nothing clever to say here.
