The Arms Hotel Lobby, Sunday [3/23]

No, Sundays were not a regular work day for Mary, but this morning she woke up early to find a a blue marshmallow bunny in her hair. After that, sleeping in didn't seem like such a great idea. Now she was sitting at the front desk, drinking her coffee and watching peeps run all over the place while the sous chef chased them with a broom.

There were Peeps stuck all over Lacey's suitcase and even one in her hair by the time she got to the hotel, and how was that for a first impression of a town?

She watched the sous chef and his broom go running by, the expression on her face one of complete bewilderment, before turning to Mary. "Hi. Why has the candy gone crazy?"

Okay, this was definitely a very different kind of weird town than Dog River. "I guess I am," Lacey replied, sighing as another Peep started to crawl up her leg and then couldn't seem to manage it somehow. "Lacey Burrows. I don't know if I have a reservation?"

She hadn't actually looked at her itinerary in that much detail, mostly to spite Wanda. That had worked out well, hadn't it?

"Um." Lacey rummaged in her purse for her itinerary and stared at it as soon as she realized there wasn't a return trip marked on it anywhere. Chalk that up as one more thing she wouldn't be mentioning to anyone back in Dog River. Especially the editor of the Howler, although suddenly Hank's egg-and-toilet-paper-throwing version of letters to the editor sounded a lot more appealing.

She cleared her throat lightly. "Possibly for a while?"

The Peep in Lacey's hair started to teeter and rolled forward, bouncing off her nose as it fell. "I'm thinking mini-bar."

"That sounds great," Lacey said, the tone of her voice matching her frazzled expression. "I had the strangest trip here and I could use a nap."

"Rough . . . I don't even know how to describe that trip. No, I think I can get the bag myself." Lacey signed the register quickly, then looked down at the Peeps that were still swarming it -- not so much swarming, maybe, as just hopelessly stuck. "Oh, they're starting to look a little lethargic."

"Cleaning crew?" asked Lacey, staring in horrified fascination and some degree of pity at the drawer of Peeps. "You mean you don't have a regular one?"

Lacey put one hand on her hip and squinted at Mary. "Okay, now I know you're just winding me up," she said, and never mind the Peeps everywhere.

That was a lot to take in, and Lacey sputtered for a moment or two. "Right," she said finally; it seemed like the safest response since she was still too dazed to remember the answer to the barrage of questions she could have asked. "Well, I'm Lacey Burrows, by the way, and I'm sure I'll be seeing you around, Mary."
