Okay, so Wanda hadn't been kidding yesterday when she'd said that the travel ticket Lacey had won from the Howler listed her departure point as behind Joe's barn. And Lacey certainly hadn't expected to find herself in Bermuda on a layover (take that, Brent, you and your pretend vacations!) on the way over, either. Okay, so it had been the back alley behind a seedy bar in Bermuda, but she was pretty sure she was probably the first person from Dog River who could ever say they'd actually been there.

Finally the trip was over, she was disoriented and a little more mussed than her fastidious nature liked, and she was a hundred and seventeen-point-eight percent sure nobody from Dog River could ever say they'd traveled by portal before, but Lacey was walking down the causeway onto Fandom Island, towing her Laura Ashley rolling suitcase -- the one people in Dog River made fun of -- behind her.

"Aw," she said out loud, "what a cute little place!" Seeing the ocean around her for a while would be a nice change from grain fields everywhere, that was for sure.

And that was one thing she knew better than to say out loud to anyone in Dog River.

. . . yeah, let's see how long that bit of better judgment lasted.
