The York Gallery [4/12]

Today was Teddy's first day of work at the Gallery and he was trying very hard not to screw up.

No, he wasn't sure exactly what he could screw up while standing at the reception desk, but there had to be something. Right?

The exhibit was still up and ready to be viewed by the public.

Where Teddy was trying very hard not to doodle things out of boredom.

It was only fair, really, for all the time Teddy visited him at work, that Chad would come over and see him on his first day at his new job. He came in with some dinner from Ching Tai and a faint smirk on his face as he leaned (carefully) on the desk; Teddy, of all people, would be likely to notice that Chad looked a little disheveled.

"Guess what I did."

There was food and a boyfriend...

This was an awesome day in Teddy's book.

"What did you do?"

Chad's grin got a little bigger.

"Wrestled a bear."

....

...

"What?"

"The bear ran away," Chad explained, shifting so that he could start taking out the food from the carry-out bag, under the assumption that Teddy's new boss wouldn't mind a dinner break, "so I think that means I won, too, but, if he'd have stuck around a bit more, he'd have gotten it."

At that, Teddy facepalmed and chuckled. "Okay, let me rephrase my first question: Why?"

Chad blinked at Teddy, head tilting as if he'd asked a rather difficult question.

"Uhh...because...it was there?"

Wasn't that obvious?

It was probably best to just drop this now.

Really.

"You brought food?"

"I did," Chad grunted with a nod, continuing to take out little boxes of ~~moddable~~ food. "Figured I owed you a few work dinners by this point."

Of course, the thing with Chad picking up dinner was that Chad picked up...a lot of food.

Which was good for two growing teenage boys, but even then...

Damn did Chad bring a lot.

"Dinner in an art gallery," Teddy said, grinning and digging through the bags. "How romantic of you."

"You know me," Chad said, breaking open a box of spring rolls and reaching for a sweet and sour sauce packet. "If I hadn't been named for my Japanese side, Romantic woulda been one of my fifteen middle names."

Rolling his eyes, Teddy leaned over the desk to give him a quick kiss. "Well we should be glad for that."

"So how's the job so far?" Chad asked, proving his romantic side by practically eating one of the spring rolls in one bite.

"Seems okay so far," Teddy said, looking around in case Miss York was going to pop up and yell at him. Not seeing her, he hopped up in the desk, snagging some food.

"How's the art?" Chad asked, reaching for a now needed napkin.

"It's..." Teddy shrugged. "..arty?"

Chad looked at his boyfriend for a moment.

"How'd you get this job, again?" he asked.

Teddy shrugged again, trying not to laugh. "I have no idea."

Chad gave an amused grunt. "Nice. Well, you look nice and friendly behind this desk, maybe that was it."

"I'm very personable." Teddy nodded, opening a box of Kung Pao pork and snagging a piece of meat.

"Might be good," Chad theoretisized, "practise, 'cause you gotta be really personable and stuff."

"Pretending I know stuff," Teddy added. "Being around high culture and junk..."

"S'good thing you got this job even if you don't know how," Chad commented, privately wondering exactly where wrestling bears might fall into place on the culture scale.

He probably placed it a lot higher than it deserved.

A lot.

Which was okay with Teddy, really. Since Chad seemed so excited about it.

He nodded again, chewing on his food for a moment.

Mmm, Ching Tai never disappointed Chad, he had to admit, and he munched on the dinner quietly in a sort of contented quiet.

It was a while-- about a container of a steamed dumplings-- later that Teddy spoke.

"Thanks."

"Don't mention it," Chad said, and leaned in to steal a quick kiss off of Teddy's cheek, and went back to munching on some pad thai.
