J,GOB [late afternoon]

Anakin was sitting in J,GOB nursing a cup of black coffee and waiting for Luke and Jaina to arrive before he went up to Connecticut for the weekend.

It wouldn't do to leave town on your birthday weekend without at least having cake with your family.

Luke wandered into the store a few moments later, carrying a box (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/warfare/81e6/) under his arm and grinning. "Happy birthday."

"You didn't have to get me anything," Anakin said, looking bewildered. "I'm not used to getting birthday gifts."

"Get used to it," Luke said, handing the package over.

Anakin smiled over at him and opened the gift. "Weapons I can make myself," he said, clearly delighted. "Thank you. Office hours will be so much more entertaining."

Jaina arrived with a small bag of stuff in one hand, because she was holding a slutty Thin Mint in the other. "Sorry I'm going to make today weird," she said.

The Thin Mint tried to get a look at the table, "Hey, you said there'd be other cookies!"

"Um," said Anakin.

"That's what I said. Happy birthday," Jaina said.

"Thank you?" Anakin replied. "It's a cookie that talks."

"Oh, no, he's not a present. John's a cookie today," she explained.

"They're around. You'll meet them later," she said. It was hopefully a lie.

"So you say," even as a cookie, John had a rather amazing pout. "Set me on the table, I spy some coffee!"

"Promise me you're not going to dunk yourself." No way was she setting him down before he said it.

"But it's coffee!" he whined. She was such a spoilsport.

"How weird?" Luke asked.

"My boyfriend's currently a cookie whore," she announced, sighing.

"I don't think I'd go quite that far for a good cookie," Luke said thoughtfully as he missed the point.

"No, I mean he's a cookie, and he's a little... friendly towards other cookies. It's very strange."

It took Luke a second, then it was hard to tell if he'd ever remember to stop laughing. "That's John?" he gasped out. "Wow is your present ever better than mine."

Having managed to escape to the table, John went in search of baked goods since he was being denied a coffee bath. "If this is a party, there should at least be some cheap cake." Cheap in that good sort of easy way.

Anakin stared after him, his expression switching between horrified and delighted.

"You okay?" John asked, thinking how strange the girl's friends were. And all of them with such bad hair.

"Oh, I'm great," Anakin said. "Are you looking for friends?"

"I was expecting to meet some alternative baked goods after being denied a visit with the Chips Ahoy earlier," John admitted. "Seen any around?"

Anakin blinked. "It is a bakery," he said slowly. "How alternative are you looking for?"
